Tooth pain - when is enough enough?!

I have been having problems with my back molars on one side for almost 2 years after a botched filling. Not only did it ruin that specific tooth but somehow caused problems for the one behind it.

I now go private, they have tried a root canal and it failed as I am in constant pain. I am miserable and sick of being in pain every day of my life. I haven't been able to eat on one side of my mouth for the entire time.

I don't know what comes next. They don't seem to want to remove my back tooth as I am so young, but I don't know how much I can go on like this.

Has anyone experienced similar? My teeth are in good condition, I take care of them and am just devastated this has happened.

If you are in constant pain, I would likely either remove it. If you are determined to keep the tooth, and the dentist feels it’s a feasible option, they can attempt to redo the root canal treatment and fill/crown the tooth. This may not work though.
I’m not hugely convinced that the “botched filling” is the dentists fault though, as ultimately they didn’t put the decay there in the first place. Any dental
procedure carries an element of risk and while dentists do their best to mitigate the damage we do to our teeth, there are limitations.

MrsJoker thanks for responding so quick. Honestly, she had graduated a few months ago and I didn't know this. She went too deep and hit the nerve and that started it all - I had my x rays transferred to my new dentist and the cavity was very small and yet she went down so deep it damaged my nerve - I haven't complained or anything but yes, I do feel it was botched.

I have a genetic condition (?) where I, for some reason, seem to have double the amount of roots in my molars and . they are twisted, which I think is the reason the root canal failed. It was a very difficult and lengthy procedure that took a number of appointments with a specialist.

It's just so difficult. I cannot afford £5,000 for two implants, I am just in tears every day over it all and it's constantly on my mind as I have to be careful not to accidentally close my mouth due to the pain.

Bit of a rant more than anything, just feel really helpless. Thank you for talking to me.

I feel for you honestly ,if I were you I would have it extracted if it's causing you this much pain. You could have the same problem if you were to have to have it redone.
Yes your teeth might shift a little but maybe down the road you could have an implant if feasible.

BlueCornishPixie · 28/01/2019 22:16

If the tooth is causing you pain, I would extract it. If it is difficult due to your roots then you might need a referral but you can't be left in pain. Again you could try re-root treatment but presumably it would need a specialist again. A failed root filling is definitely indication for extraction!

Is it a top or bottom tooth? Have they checked out other causes such as grinding, sinus problems, cracked tooth?

All fillings carry a risk of nerve exposure and x-rays can greatly underestimate the amount of decay, I've had x-rays where it looks small and it's turned out to be pretty extensive, it's a 2d image of a 3d object. I don't think I could look at an x-ray of a tooth
with decay in it and say "this decay is definitely not into the nerve" and I would be dubious of any dentist who said that tbh. I would also be dubious of it causing problems in the tooth behind.

Feel for you op. I have been nursing a cracked tooth for several months. Good dentist and treatment plan but due to bereavement and funeral etc etc decided to nurse it rather than extract and implant ( which will now happen soon). I haven’t been able to eat on one side for 4 months now ( and it’s my natural side) and have caught it several times which has been agony. My treatment will start very soon.
I had a tooth extracted around two years ago and because of where it was haven’t bothered to spend insane money having an implant for that one. Hasn’t caused me any trouble and the tooth had to come out because I was in real pain with it (failed root canal and crown- mooned ‘fault’). Good luck. What a design fault teeth were, eh?

HeronLanyon · 28/01/2019 22:25

Noones not mooned.

My sister had this .Dentist said he would try root canal.Half way through he realised it was not going to work ,- tooth was cracked .She had it extracted .Relief at last.May get an implant but feels it not necessary now.

Thank you EVERYONE for replying. I was in a mess last night, this has all helped a lot.

I didn't mention as I forgot but my main issue really is that the dentists and specialists can't seem to figure out the problem! I am pretty sure the tooth is cracked, they all say this is what it seems like, but then when they do all the tests and everything they don't find anything.

Thank you all again.
