Grumbling appendix - anyone had one? Or lower right quadrant abdominal pain which wasn’t an appendicitis.

I’ve got a pain in the lower right quadrant of my abdomen, around the tummy button and down. Had it a couple of days. Feel fine in myself. The pain feels like a sort of hot ache, is through to my back too at times. Definitely not gallstones as I have had my gall bladder removed. Not period related as too high up in the stomach.

As I’m not unwell it’s obviously not an appendicitis so I just wondered if it could be a grumbling appendix?

I could be very wrong but I thought you became more unwell if it bursts? Think that’s what causes the temperature etc. When my dad had it he only had the pain, which got worse over 2-3 days. His had just burst when he got to hospital.

However I get the same & am putting it down to grumbling appendix (or endometriosis on it). The pain I get usually only lasts for part of a day though before disappearing again.

My pain isn’t getting worse either, it’s been the same for the last two days. I think it may just be a medical mystery!

Ovulation pain?

Practically everyone in my family has had their appendix out, with differing symptoms. It can be a tricky one. My brother’s was grumbling - he had periods of reasonably severe pain in the area you describe, which would then disappear only to reappear a couple of weeks later. Happened about 3 times before he had it out.

I had pain around my belly button which then moved to the appendix area and got worse over 1 night, accompanied by vomiting, which seemed to be the trigger for hospital.

My sister’s seemed like severe food poisoning (pain and vomiting only). The only reason the doctor realised it was appendicitis was because when he pressed and released her appendix she screamed the place down on the release - that decided the diagnosis.

I guess they can do a blood test for infection, if you end up in hospital, but surgery seems to be the only reliable way to know. The recovery is fine. Good luck!

I had this. Admitted 3 times over a couple of years with ?appendictis, nausea and vomiting, usually low grade fever too. Last time it was more painful although they kept me in for 3 days, it didn’t get any worse. I had a variety of tests including Ultrasound scan, CT Abdo (with and without contrast), gastroscopy, colonoscopy, cystoscopy and when that all looked fairly normal (have a hiatus hernia and reflux and IBS but that wasn’t causing the abdo pain) I pushed for a gynae referral and they agreed to do a laparoscopy - I said to the GP that with all the other tests being normal I thought it was most likely to be gynae. They found and treated endometriosis- not a huge shock as I’ve had painful and sometimes heavy periods for years. Honestly, it was better within 24 hours. I was post-op sore and bloated but that settled and the pain went away. It had been so bad I was off long-term sick from work and on loads of painkillers. I had no idea endo caused chronic pain - I just thought it was painful periods.
