DD (5) really bad tummy pains...help?

I posted last week about my dd who had been sick a couple of times and was suffering with really bad stomach pains, she was generally unwell and had no appetite. We have seen a couple of doctors over the past week and the final diagnoses was a stomach bug.

She is better in herself (during the day) and hasn't been sick since last Monday however she is still suffering from really bad stomach pains, especially at night. They seem to start about 5pm and gradually get worse during the evening and night. We've just had a fifth night of being up with her from about midnight until 3am, screaming in pain. It is horrible to see her in such pain and there is nothing we can do to help. We've tried calpol and neurofen which don't seem to make a difference and the doc prescribed an anti-spasmodic medicine which I am not sure id helping.

Has anybody had any experience of this? What can we do to help her? It just seems that it is going on and on...I feel so helpless when she is in such pain.

I'd get her back to the doctors, she shouldn't be in that much pain.

If GP just says its a bug, would consider taking her into hospital and saying she has been screaming in pain - GP has limited diagnostic tools, hospital doesn't.

I'd take her to A&E. A colleague of mine has just got out of hospital, having been there since the beginning of March, due to a burst appendix, mis-diagnosed as a stomach bug. I don't want to scare you, and I'm not saying that your dd has appendicitis (I'm not an expert, but I think that with that the pain would be constant, rather than getting worse in the evening), but my colleague's experience has convinced me that it's always worth getting stomach pains that go on for any length of time checked out...

do migraines run in the family? some children have abdominal migraine that can last a while. Other symtoms would be paleness, claminess and sleeping a lot.

Hope you get it sorted soon, poor love.

We have seen two emergency (out of hours) doctors and our own GP twice in the past week. The fact that she is better during the day (active, eating and less pain) led the doctor to beleive that it was/is bug which has left damage or irritation to the gut which eventaully go - a type of IBS, it is worse at night because of the digestive system processing later in the day. This is what the GP said.

However I have never heard of anything like this before and wondered if others had heard of such things. All the doctors we have seen have examined her and ruled out appendicitis. It is just that when the pain starts is follows a similar pattern each day...weird?

How is your dd?

Still getting stomach pain during the night, enough to wake her but not screaming any more.

I have spoken to a couple of people recently and there seems to have been some kind of 'bug' that has some vommiting (not lots) but the main symptom is stomach pain.

I just hope it's going....it's been 11 days.

Hi

My son had something similar. After the vomiting he got stomach pains. It turned out to be constipation probably as he could not keep anything down...

The doctor did suggest consipation, however she is going to the loo normally.

How long did your son's pains go on for?

Hi

He was in so much pain that he was crying in the night. We gave him something to sort it out straight away. We then kept him on very soft foods for a while - mainly yoghurt with good bacteria, chicken and rice.

what did you give him? Was the pain mostly during the night? How long did it last for? My dd has some medicine for stomach spasms but I am not sure that it is working.
Thanks
