Racing heartbeat

I’m 36, fit and healthy, but have noticed recently I’m having episodes of rapid heartbeats when I’m not doing anything. I’m sitting here now and can feel my heart thudding away - have counted beats and it’s about 104 per minute. No physical cause I can think of (don’t smoke, do exercise, healthy weight). I am generally an anxious person so I’m sure it could be linked to that, but I’m not feeling particularly worried today and it’s banging away. I’m noticing it quite frequently. I did have an echocardiogram two years ago due to chest pains (I’m sure they were probably anxiety related) and everything was normal. Should I see the GP? Any idea of possible treatment?

I am going through the same but mine is about 160/70 and im v.v.v heavily pregnant. Prepregnancy it was about 55bpm.

I went dr thinking theyd dismiss me but was sent for am ecg, echocardiogram and a 48hr monitor where I have to keep a diary of triggers.

Worth seeing the dr. As I am sure they would take it seriously. It maybe anixity but always good to get checked right Flowers

Could you be anaemic? Have you had any alcohol/caffeine? Could you have (or be getting over) a virus? Do you drink enough water? I find mine is fast and a bit erratic when I'm dehydrated.

Hungrypuffin · 25/01/2019 11:02

Hiphop, I doubt I’m anemic (I eat red meat and give blood reasonably regularly and have never been then). I have had two coffees today though. Should I cut out caffeine before going to the gp?

Ok, I'm absolutely not a medical professional and would suggest seeing your GP if you're concerned. But I'd personally avoid caffeine and make sure you're drinking enough water/fluids initially as that can only help.

RiverTam · 25/01/2019 11:50

make appointment with GP today, OP. Sure, cut down on the coffees but I really doubt 2 coffees a day is causing that (not an expert).

bassackwards · 25/01/2019 11:55

Any chance you have an infection?

Birdie6 · 25/01/2019 11:57

I used to have palpitations - doc told me to cut out caffeine and the heart has been perfect ever since. Even two coffees can be a problem if you're sensitive to it.

Hungrypuffin · 25/01/2019 12:03

I don’t think I have an infection or virus. It’s calmed down now to 85 beats, still a bit fast but less so than before. I will phone the GP though.

I would pop to see the GP - they will probably do an ECG.

My first thought was anaemia - my heart rate can be as high as 140 at my worst and I get the racing too. Even if you have an iron-rich diet there are other factors that can cause it. Just ask for a blood test to check your iron, B12 and thyroid maybe?

There's an app you can get that checks your heart rate too. Sometimes I think mine is racing but when I check it's ok.

I'm sure it's fine - it could well be anxiety but it's easy to be fobbed off by that so a few checks won't hurt :)
