Possible melanoma, freaking out

I’ve name changed for this. Quite by chance it has been discovered that I have a mole on my back that has grown and changed in size and colour over the last 18 months. Everything has moved so quickly, it was discovered on Saturday and is being removed on Friday.

I am absolutely freaking out. I saw my GP today who hasn’t really put my mind at ease. He said it could be one of 10 different things but he also said he thought it was more likely to be a melanoma than not.

I am absolutely freaking out. In my head I am imagining worst case scenarios. This thing has been growing for at least the last 18 months. What if I have cancer all over my body?

Sorry for this very long post. I don’t know why I’m posting because I know no one can tell me what’s going to happen. But I’m just imagining dying and leaving my children and husband.

It's great that your GP is on the ball and the referral has been speedy.
Try and remain calm, I've had family members on both sides of the family go through this recently. Both were thankfully fine, I appreciate that it's stressful waiting to know. Try and keep busy over the coming days to keep your mind active. Fingers crossed x

It's understandable. You are worried x

It does not necessarily mean it’s a malignant melanoma though, I had a mole on my back, for some reason I decided to check it (very awkward position so very hard to see) and it had turned black and was shaped like Australia rather than nice and round like it was before, I freaked out as well, went to doctors urgent 2 week referral for removal and test and it was benign so just because it’s changed does not mean it’s malignant melanoma, I have no idea how long mine had been changing shape and colour either, it could have been months and months as it was so hard to see without a mirror and being a contortionist! You are doing the right thing and getting it removed, I know how you feel though it’s utterly horrible but it is very possibly benign and if not could still be in the early stages, it really does not mean you are dying, lots of people have malignant melanomas removed and are cured it’s not necessarily a death sentence.

Very worrying for you and I truly hope you get the all clear. On the flip side I know of two people who have had melanoma. One had it twice and it travelled to his lymph nodes. I’m happy to report that both cases were well over 10 years ago and both people are healthy and living happy lives cancer free.

So sorry OP, fingere crossed for good news - but try not to worry too much until you know if it's something to worry about. Two weeks ago a doctor found two suspected melanoma on DHs back; he had one removed that weekend and the other will be removed this weekend. Next week we should get the results from the first biopsy, will be another few weeks for the second. If caught early Ian's it hasn't spread down, it can be a very simple removal with minimal treatment required. Like I said, fingers crossed for you x

Thank you for your replies, they are really helpful and reassuring. I can’t believe how Saturday morning I was just bumbling through life and today I am thinking about all the worst case scenarios imaginable. Will do my best to keep calm!

I had a mole and was sent 3 days later to the melanoma clinic to have it removed. It looked suspicious but was nothing. Melanoma clinics see you really quickly and can tell you very quickly.
