8yo (dc's med wasn't easily available in other form)

At 9 we practiced with tic tacs - has worked out well as she has needed to take tablets since.

BluebirdHill · 20/01/2019 20:38

Still giving Calpol at 9. Works well, why bother with anything else?

Well, at some point your child will presumably have tablets-unless they are still having Calpol at 18!

I was just wondering what age people stopped.

Because tablets are much cheaper. Dd was terrible at swallowing tablets so was probably about 12. Ds was maybe 10/11

and wwyd if a medicine is not available as tasty liquid?

MirandaWest · 20/01/2019 20:43

About 12 I think

weechops · 20/01/2019 20:44

Practicing with tictacs is a great idea! My dd12 still has calpol as the thought of swallowing a paracetamol makes her gag, so I think I’ll be trying this with her! Smile

3boysandabump · 20/01/2019 20:46

My 7 & 8 year old both take half a paracetamol rather than have calpol.

OddBoots · 20/01/2019 20:47

DS couldn't swallow tablets until he was 19(yes, 19), he had fast-melts then soluble paracetamol on the rare occasions he needed painkillers before then. We tried practising with tic-tacs many times but he just couldn't do it.

Then at 19 he got tonsillitis and had to swallow antibiotics so he pushed through and got there in the end.

dementedpixie · 20/01/2019 20:47

I buy the caplets rather than round tablets as they are easier to swallow

Youcouldbemysilversprings · 20/01/2019 20:47

Calpol make tablets, that dissolve on the child's tongue, they're a godsend for dd, all that sticky sweet medicine can't be nice in high doses, or good for them really.

dementedpixie · 20/01/2019 20:48

The fastmelts are really expensive though. We used them before trying normal paracetamol caplets

Gentlygently · 20/01/2019 20:50

My 6 and 3 yr old can both manage tablets (different medication). I give calpol until they don’t want it and would prefer a tablet.

IggyAce · 20/01/2019 20:50

My DD was 10/11 when we first gave her a tablet. I need to break it in half and she can take it no problem.

Lougle · 20/01/2019 20:55

DD1 was 9, DD2 was 7 and DD3 was 5. DD3 learned first because she's a stubborn little thing, and she learned with tic tacs.
