My 3 week old baby has come up with a rash on her face it started yesterday with what looked like prickly heat rash on one side of her face, he side I usually hold her and feed her and she sleeps with her head turned that way, so I thought it was prickly heat rash........today it has spread across her forhead under her other eye and below her nose, on her shoulders....I am mix-feeding her as I have had probs establishing bfing...anyway I have mastitus and have been on antibiotics since Thurs...so I called NHS direct to see if this could be related they say no, but as rash is getting worse now worried she has something anyone had an experience of this or ideas? I haven't introduced any new foods while expressing milk incase it causes her problems....

she has had two very green nappies this morning but I know this is related to the antibiotics...

any help appreciated.

thanks

Usually at 3 weeks, babies get spots that look like acne and this is quite normal and goes away on its own.

Sorry you've got mastitis, but glad you're continuing to bf through it as that's the best thing to do.

Have you been signed off by the midwife? If not, you could contact her about the rash.

Failing that, if the baby is otherwise well, you could go to the clinic in the week and show the hv.

Yeap my midwife signed me off last week but he did say I could call if I had a problem... but I don't want to bother him if its something "common" iykwim?!?!

I have baby clinic on Monday so I will ask on Mon about the rash...

Thanks Elasticwoman

or could be a reaction to washing powder /baby products (Johnsons are a huge culprit)

Male midwife, Lyndag?

My 4 week old DD is covered in the same rash - and HV says it is a heat rash. When she is hot or crying, it looks awful - then calms down when she is cooler / calmer.

Every day its either moved or spread somewhere else - currently all over her head, back of neck and top of back and this morning top of chest as well - but gone on forehead!

HV told me that if heads develop that are pus filled to take her to GP.

The other thing is, is that she is fine in herself - eating / weeing / pooing and sleeping and quite content.

Rash is really common at this age - worse if you are using baby proucts such as Johnsons.

Wash her in plain water only - no shampoo either. Avoid using biological soap powders and conditioners.

Antibiotics won't cause the rash. With masitis try and make sure you breast feed frequently to shift the milk. If she is latching on better she will move the milk better than a pump will if that is what you are using to express. Make sure that your bra is not too tight either. Hope the rash and mastits improve soon.

Yeap male midwife he is lovely, really sweet and so so nice, I have a female one who checked my stitches but have seen him more (community midwife) he is so sweet and friendly the first day he came after I came home from hospital I burst into tears and he was just so sweet and lovely

BTW - I had used Johnson's on bubba but only the yellow one which the midwifes at the hospital said to use have been using since day 1? Also using fairy non-bio soap powder (all her clothes/bedding/towels) washed in this prior to her having contact with them? These are washed in a separate load to our washing as well to avoid risk of contamination iykwim?

I'm having to express as I can't get her to latch on and I figured expressed milk is better than no breast milk but my milk is going down if I didn't have mastitus I would increase the expressing if I had time to increase my milk.... I guess nature is having it's say...

Will try to ensure she is not too hot and hold her in my other arm for feeding/cuddling to see if it improves.

Thanks for the responses you girls rock
