Please help me drop my triglyceride level.

I had some bloods done routinely and my triglyceride level was a shocking 3.6.

I have a repeat blood test (3 months on) mid March and I'm hoping to have this down to my usual 1.2.

I'm cutting calories, cutting bad fats, increasing low carbs, eating omega supplements and brisk walking for 15 mins a day. Is there anything else I can do?

Does anyone know if it's actually possible to reduce triglyceride levels significantly over 8 weeks?

All other blood tests were low/ normal, it was just this one. It seems a bit odd.

Do you drink much?

unexpectedgifts · 20/01/2019 02:33

@IWantMyHatBack , the odd glass of wine, but a bottle will last a couple of weeks. I'm not a big drinker.

It's one of the random things that can increase your level. What did your GP say?

Twotabbycats · 20/01/2019 02:53

Mine are 3.1. My LDL is high too. My meals are good but I eat too much junk in between. I was told to eat fewer animal products including meat, butter and eggs, and more good fats like olive oil, avocados, oily fish and nuts. I also need to lose weight and eat less sugar!

I've been told if it keeps going up I'll have to go on statins. Mine is definitely a combination of hereditary and dietary factors.

My doctor did say that even though the numbers are high there hasn't been a big increase in the last year (for some reason there was a big jump last year, when I actually lost weight!). So she didn't think it was worth testing again sooner than next year. She didn't think there would be much change in 6 months so I doubt you will make much difference in 8 weeks. But worth a try if they are determined to test again so soon. Have you tried the cholesterol-lowering drinks?

There is a cholesterol support thread in general health, just started yesterday.

Eggs don't increase ldl or tri-g, so don't worry about that (unless you're eating millions :p)

@IWantMyHatBack
My GP isn't worried, she says I'm still low risk and my usual readings are normally around 1.2.

My issue is I took out life insurance as I'd assumed my last bloods were all normal. I've had to tell the insurance company and they want a fasting lipid test in March. This will be 3 months after the last one.

@Twotabbycats
I've ordered niacin and fresh turmeric root to help as these have been found to significantly reduce bad lipids.

I think I'm doing all I can.
