Appendicitis post op complications

My 11 year old had keyhole surgery to remove his appendix a few days ago. He’s just been readmitted with a temp of 38.7 for antibiotics and an ultrasound. Very painful and tender in the appendix area. He just didn’t look right or be getting much better. Can’t see any redness or weeping though. Anyone have any experience of this and how long he might be in hospital for?

Yeah I had mine out last June. The pain intensified over two days and I was taken back to theatre where they did two procedures, one was unrelated per say to appendix(don’t want to say more as outing as rare condition) but they did remove the appendix stump.

Apparently when they remove the appendix, they usually leave a small stump of it as it helps prevent an abscess, unfortunately that can also become inflamed and need to be removed! Luckily I escaped an abscess despite removal of the stump.

I was in for just under two weeks, but unfortunately I can’t tell you how much of that was recovery from appendix and how much from the other procedure(it was all laparoscopic). Generally people are in and out pretty quickly from just appendix though from what I’ve heard from friends etc. Hope they get to the bottom of it and he recovers soon.

He was doing kind of ok yesterday, as expected, but today not great and then he had a temperature spike this evening which prompted A&E and readmittamce. He’s in quite a lot of pain - but am unsure how much pain he’d be in if recovery was “normal”.

HAVe they done bloods? They will hopefully check wether his crp level is still high and maybe scan him, although I will say when I went for my ct scan after my first op they couldn’t see anything wrong, but agreed to take me back in due to the level of pain. even tramadol and oramorph were not touching it!

Bloods are slightly raised but not significantly so. A few slightly raised markers apparently. They don’t seem really sure (won’t commit themselves) and said they’re being cautions and keeping him in.

My dd developed an abcess post her appendicectomy. She got sicker & sicker over the 48hrs post op & when they eventually scanned her, it perfed while they were scanning her. I will never forget the foul smell. She had a second surgery to open the original site & then had a drain attached for another 2/52. Was in hospital for 3 in total. Discharged home with the open surgery site left exposed & a wound bag attached for the next 6/52. Was seen weekly by the surgical team & missed an entire term of school. Horrendous experience I never want to repeat. I really hope your son's experience is different & he has a speedy recovery. But; if your instinct tells you he's unwell, fight your corner. I was NOT listened to, the surgical team refused to acknowledge how ill my DD obv was & the whole incident was badly managed. FWIW, she made a full recovery, but it took a good year for her to get anywhere back to normal.
