Nurofen plus - how to get off?

Hi. I have been taking nurofen plus for about 5 years now - I take about 24 per day - for pain following a car accident - I need to get off these pills and would like advice. Tried just to quit last week - but the withdrawals were so unpleasant - I started again. Can anyone tell me how to structure a taper plan?
I have 4 children and these pills make me so dull - I need to be off them now and would like to do it as quickly as possible. I did ask my GP for health and she just laughed and told me to stop!!
And advice would be so appreciated.

Brave woman, hope all goes well tomorrow - you could treat this like an on line diary and we will try and keep you encouraged when it gets tough!

Hey Cargirl - thanks so much - tis appreciated to have someone in my corner!!
OK - I will treat this as an online diary - and it would be great to have some encouragement! If there is anyone else out there suffering........... then come along and we can do this together?
Well - today - will take the same dose as yesterday - 16 - and all going well - I will reduce either tomorrow or Wednesday.
So far - so good.............

Well done, but be careful that you are not doing it to fast. You may find that the withdrawals symptoms 'catch up' with you and that you feel awful a couple of days after the reduction. If this happens I suggest that you go back to base and reduce more slowly (prob as per my original suggestion).

But good luck. Just don't rush!

eikon · 03/07/2007 15:29

Thanks Lysbeth
Yep - on thinking it all over - I now realise this will be better done slowly - I know its been going on for years........... so I really dont want to fail - nor do I want to tell hubbie (my own reasons - which I wont discuss) about it - I just would like to reduce and be off - without having to suffer any sort of obvious withdrawals.
Lysbeth - may I ask - have you experience of this - do you work in the health field?
Just curious.
I have scanned thro the posts and havent found anyone else in this position and yet when I read "Overcount" I understand that there are literally thousands of young women like me who are abusing these OTC medications - yet nothing appearing in this forum? Oh well - no matter - its somthing which I will now deal with...........
So - today's count is 16 - same as yesterday.
I will go and do some more research on the net too........
Would be really nice to have someone "travel" along with me - to have someone withdrawing too from any of the OTC medicines like N+, solpadeine etc
And I do appreciated everyone's comments and support.

Hi
Yes, I do work professionally with people with addictions - but on here I am just suggesting things that you can follow, or not. Obviously, I am not in my professional capacity here - just another mum with some advice!
Anyway, hope you're surviving.

CarGirl · 03/07/2007 21:23

Hi glad you've got no withdrawls as such yet, I struggle just trying to cut out caffeine the headaches get so bad I just can't take not having it all! I'm sure there must be a forum with others trying to give up somewhere on the net, was it co-codamol that was withdrawn from the market and a lot of people were addicted to that?

Must be hard not being to get your dh to support you, just the little things like "I'm really not feeling well please take the children out/away for a few hours"

Go for it!

Lysbeth · 06/07/2007 13:51

Eikon - are you ok? Wondering how you are coping.

I take 4 to 6 Nurofen plus a day and have done for several years..how do I stop? I tried going cold Turkey but it was awful …I never exceed the stated dose of 6 per day..I usually only take 4 per day. I really want to quit but it’s hard .
