TMI alert - Abnormal bleeding for over a month - worried as have had LLETZ previously. Has anyone else had this?

Hi, I am really hoping that some of you ladies can help me as I am getting really worried. Aged 47 and periods although have always been heavy and painful, have been regular. I missed a period in November but then started bleeding on December 13th. It wasn't normal 'period' bleeding but brownish and quite light and I had to start using a regular size sanitary towel. This lasted a week then the blood became red, was quite light but then I started to get 'surges' of heavier bleeding which meant having to use night time towels and super plus tampons at times. This has been going ever since alternating lighter bleeding with heavier 'surges' of bleeding. I think I did have my regular period on January 6th - 11th as I was passing blood clots and a couple of large pieces of endometrial tissue. Still bleeding now. I usually have to use super plus tampons for my period but have been having to use regular tampons outside my usual period dates to cope with the amount of blood. I have a GP appointment on the 22nd, the first I could get from when I phoned 3 weeks ago but I am really worried and feeling so anxious as I had a LLETZ procedure for abnormal smears about 6 years ago. Has anyone had anything similar and how was it investigated or resolved? Thanks very much for any advice or insight you can give.

I'm 46 and at 42 my periods became very heavy and much closer together, I became anaemic and stayed at home a lot
In the end I had endometrial ablation and haven't had a drop since
You are definitely doing the right thing to get this checked out but periods can change considerably at our age

MissSmiley thanks for your response - endometrial ablation sounds extreme but glad it sorted your problem. I am not bleeding so heavily that I am soaking through pads and tampons but enough that I m having to change a regular size tampon every 3-4 hours. I am thinking perimenopause but can't help worrying it is something more.
