Wisdom tooth extraction

i had a wisdom tooth extracted yesterday under a GA at hospital.
i was going to have a local but they said i could have a GA cos it was crooked and so being a chicken i opted for it!!!!!
i was really shocked at how things have changed.
it was like a production line, i was under GA for over an hour (dont know if this is usuall in this procedure) but i was on the ward and was made a hot drink and given a sandwich and was literally "chucked" out of my bed within an hour, get dressed now and wait in the waiting room because we need your bed!!!!!, blood was literally pouring down my chin-i didnt know this another patient told me and got the nurse she said oh you,ll be allright just bite down on some tissue and then dh came and off i went!!!
i am still a bit shocked, is this what happens nowadays cos the last time i had a GA for something else, i was left to sleep off the GA, given drinks etc and not allowed home until the evening.
but i am glad that i had a GA cos the surgeon came around about 15 mins after i got to the ward and told me that they couldnt get the tooth out and had had to use the drill and so im glad i wasnt awake for THAT!!!!! softy arent i?

I had 3 out under GA several years ago, in the days when you stayed overnight, I had lovely bruises on my chest, where they'd knelt on me!

It has been like for that for ages, from the tales we are told.

I am shocked that she told you to bite on tissue, as it flakes off & if it gets into the socket it can cause an infection. Much better using gauze, or a hanki.

I had mine done at Bupa. Dh got a fll english while he was waiting, my own room, TV, up to date mags, newspaper. I could have stayed til midnight, but we left at around 12pm. No sweeling/brusing...fan-bloody-tastic!

And it didn't cost us a penny.

my cheek is killing me and my upper lips where they must have "stretched" to get to my tooth, my arm has been hurting since but i havent made any connection.maybe they leaned on it!!!!

i should add i have another one that needs to come out, why they wouldnt do this one at the same time is beyond me, i shall have to go through it all again, the other thing when i was coming round from the GA i could hear the 2 male porters talking about which nurses they wanted to "give one to"
so the first thing i said to them was are you perving over nurses?
my sister works at the hospital and when i told her she said oh yes they are well known for it, they perve over patients as well.

NICE.
think i might go bupa next time, was it really expensive?

jenk, my sympathies, watch out for signs of tmj. I have suffered from it since a difficult wisdom tooth extraction 3 years ago.

sandcastles · 03/07/2007 03:25

jenk, hope you are feeling better soon. They could have trapped your arm as they were leaning against you. Or they could have injected into that arm, which can mae it feel heavy & sore.

I don't understand why they didn't do them all at once, the theory being that it is best do the most possible under GA, so to reduce the need for too many sessions.

I am sorry, but I am unable to give you costs for Bupa, as it was all covered by dh's work. But giving them a ring can hurt. You would then need your dentist to refer you, if you are happy to go ahead.

Urgh, at the pervy porters!

sandcastles · 03/07/2007 03:27

But giving them a ring can't hurt

geekgirl · 03/07/2007 06:23

at pervy porters - that's just what you need!

other than that, you're not a softy, you're sensible
I had my WT out under local when I was a teenager and was treated to a running commentary including stuff like "it's rather embedded so we'll have to break away part of your jawbone" . It took well over half an hour and the dentist's glasses we're splattered with blood afterwards. Still shudder to think about it all.

Watch out for infections - I had one and passed out on the kitchen floor.

throckenholt · 03/07/2007 06:36

was this top or bottom teeth ?

I ask because I have just made an appointment to have one of my top ones out with a local injection at the dentist - sounds a whole different ball park - and I can't quite see how it can vary so much

geekgirl · 03/07/2007 09:26

I had both top & bottom out, I think the one they had to break out of my jaw was the bottom one though

they should get an idea of how difficult it'll be from the xrays, I would have thought?!

orangina · 03/07/2007 09:34

jenk1, was it impacted? Is that why you had to go to hospital for it? I have 2 wisdom teeth that need to be taken out and my dentist said he would do them in the surgery, though they are both fully through like normal molars.... Despite having been through childbirth twice, I am still a complete chicken re: pain though...!

orangina · 03/07/2007 09:34

throckenholt, exactly the same as you I think....
