Ulcerative colitis specialist?

My DS is having an ulcerative colitis flare up that is not responding to steroids. She is struggling with the NHS attitude of 'well you're just going to have to learn to live with it', and wants to go private to see if there's any more medical management that might help.
Anyone know who is the go to doctor for UC and/or Crohns in the north of England?

Which hospital is she at and is she seeing a gastroenterologist? I’ve never known them tell someone to just live with it.

Hello OP. Have you heard of the website Colitis and Crohns uk. They have contact numbers of helpline and e-mail for anything you want to ask. Information on everything to do with UC. Hope this helps.

Has she got a gastroenterologist? She needs to ring up their sec ASAP.

She should also have an IBD nurse...they can often be better 'listeners' and get treatments/appointments quicker.

What is her usual maintenance regime?

Private care for colitis is difficult.

Seeing a consultant fine. But the x-rays, bloods, colonoscopies you need....can easily rack up into 20s of thousands etc.

Thanks everyone.
She doesn't have an IBD nurse - I will tell her to investigate. She's been stable for a couple of years on some kind of immunosuppressant drugs (I think the kind they use for transplant patients). Someone at the GPs surgery messed up, and cancelled her repeat prescription, meaning she missed some (unable to get GP appt in time to get prescription re-instated) and it's been a nightmare ever since.
She is booked in for a sigmoidoscopy next week, and has had bloods done, but they just keep saying everything is within normal range.
She's really struggling to manage at the moment, and it just feels like her care isn't joined up, iykwim? She's being passed around and the consultant just kind of shrugs.
I will get her to ring the helpline, and see if there's anything they can recommend.
Any other advice for support I can offer?
