Help with gaining weight

Need help with ways I can gain weight.

So unhappy with the way I look and been like this for a while, I eat what I want but never put weight on and I've no idea about how to do this.

I've looked into supplements but I'm not sure I fancy them. Anyone got any tips/ideas?

I'm really sorry you feel this way :(

Don't get down about it. Think of all the things you do like about yourself.

The basics is calorie counting. Download myfitnesspal and track your calories for 5 days. Then take your average. Add 700 - 1000. And aim to eat 700 - 1000 more calories than you usually do. Depending on what you can manage.

Incorporate loads of nuts, full fat milk, eggs, protein powder, dried fruit and fat Greek yogurt etc these are all really high in calories but, are still healthy and manageable.

Agree with using MFP. It told me how much I needed to eat to gain 2lb a week and 3 months later I was a healthy weight.
I weighed everything at first and entered it on MFP and it kept a running total. It was a relief when I'd reached my daily calorie total and I could stop stuffing my face. I've never liked the feeling of being full up and was quite uncomfortable for the first few weeks till my digestive system got used to the extra food.

The issue is most likely to be that you have a small appetite, so eating whatever you want doesn't actually translate into eating enough to produce the small fat stores that might give you the shape you want. So if you want to put on weight you have to make sure what you do eat has a higher calorie content, without shovelling in loads of sugar.

What do you like to eat? If you're eating stuff with a lot of bulk but not much energy it probably won't be feasible to eat more of it: you'd be better off working out what you can add to it to make it more calorific. Replacing some leafy vegetables with some starchy ones might be a start.

And don't try to do it too quickly.

@HarryTheSteppenwolf I don't really have a sweet tooth I like savoury foods. Eat a lot of takeaways, bread, pies, stews, Potatoes, lasagna, that kind of thing

Do you like peanut/almond butter? You can spread it really thickly on buttered toast or dip apple slices into it.

I am underweight and lost about half a stone last year by mistake - a combination of poor eating and exercise. So the last few months I have been properly trying to regain weight and have managed about half a stone.

I found it helpful to identify the meals where I hadn't been eating enough - which for me were breakfast and lunch, and try and increase what I ate for these. I also always have a late night snack as well as a decent evening meal. It felt like forcing myself to eat in the first few weeks, but then my body kind of got used to it. I did eat quite a lot of bags of crisps as well as high calorie food such as nuts, avocados, cereal bars.

You're eating too much. It's as simple as that. Cut the carbs and reduce your caloric intake to 1,500 a day. Take aways, potatoes, breads and pasta are doing you no favors.

uhtredsonofuhtred · 17/01/2019 19:19

@MollyHuaCha no I don't like the texture, but I do like nuts

@Sycamoreleaves apparently my weight is fine (said my gp) but I lose weight in my upper body especially the face so I look gaunt, I just want to put on a stone and get upto a size 12 and I'll feel much better.

@Aquamarine1029 I think you've got my post mixed up. I'm not trying to lose weight but put it on?

Do you exercise a lot or have an active job?
Cheese and crackers are pretty good too for adding calories without being too bulky.
