Ovarian Cyst

Hi
I had an ultrasound today following some pain and I've been diagnosed with an OC that is 5.3cms in size. The sonographer said that they would recommend that I come back in 3 months for a further scan.

The Dr had prescribed me a couple of weeks of codeine for the pain but I am also getting bloating which is gets worse during the day. Obviously he hasn't seen my results yet and I should get a call in the next 10/15 days

I know part of the reason that they said to wait for the 3 months is to see if it goes away on its own, but rather than having to wait that long, could I ask for a private referral? Or would they likely say to wait the 3 months too? The idea of having the pain/bloating for 3 months just in case, doesn't fill me with joy.

What do you think?

My understanding is cysts of 5 cm or larger are unlikely to go away. You could ask the g for a referal so things are progressing.

If you have the option of going private, I would use it. There's no guarantee you'd be seen in 3 months - it might end up being longer.

Thanks. That's what I was thinking. Need to wait for the official results to come through first I guess. It's the bloating that goes with it that is driving me nuts.

I had a 6-7cm cyst as part of severe endometriosis. After the scan I found myself on a 13 week waiting list for a consultant's appointment. I was in absolute agony and painkillers were hardly denting it, so I had no hesitation in going private (fortunately I have cover through work) - I saw a consultant within 2 weeks.

I guess it just depends on whether my gp will be happy to write the referral letter before my second scan which will be scheduled for 3 months...... I hope the results get back to the go quickly so that I can move forward.

Can I ask what the consultant did?

She scheduled me in immediately for the hysterectomy I had been wanting for two years - I only had to wait 3 weeks for the operation. In my case, my womb was badly damaged, so I had a full hysterectomy and oophorectomy.

Have you had a CA125 blood test? It's a bit hit or miss as a diagnostic tool, but a raised score might speed things up for you.

Toomuchgoingon · 15/01/2019 22:28

I did have a lot of blood tests done although I don't know if that specific one was down. It was all pretty normal.

I got a private referral and have a MRI planned for a couple of weeks time. I'm a bit bemused though as sonographer said it was 5.3cms wide but consultant is saying it's about twice the size of that. (But he has only seen the report and letter from GP). How can it be so different, unless it is a typo?.

Oh well, guess I will know for sure once I have the MRI.......

Hopefully it will go away. I seem to get them all the time. I know when I have one because I’m familiar with the pain. During an episode I had a scan and they found an 7cm ovary cyst. I was rescanned in 3 months and it had gone.

DerelictWreck · 27/01/2019 10:23

Hi OP,

I had 5cm cysts removed from each ovary this year / every scan and doctor I saw gave me a different reading! Apparently radiology is an art, not a science Hmm

You're lucky you got codeine - I had to wait 6 months between diagnosis and surgery and the doctors wouldn't give me anything for the pain!

Had mine taken out in August, so if you've got any questions just ask. Am intrigued as to why you've been booked in for an MRI?

Toomuchgoingon · 28/01/2019 05:10

I think I've been booked in for the MRI as I also have fibroids as well as the cyst. I am also fat so it may be easier for them to see exactly what I have where. It will make it easier for them to decide exactly what they need to operate on.

If fibroids are big, he say they may remove my womb as well as the ovary. If not, they will just take the ovary.

As for comment about the different size, I can imagine that they can vary a bit, but from 5.3cm to over 10?. That's double the size!. Oh well, hopefully they will have a better idea after the MRI....

Derelict, was yours removed with keyhole surgery?. What was recovery like?

OP posts:
DerelictWreck · 28/01/2019 15:11

Yes, keyhole although one incision is a bit bigger as they needed the angle.

Recovery wasn't too bad. I was home within a few hours but morphine and I don't get on so the first 24 hours were brutal. Ooo then it was a week or so of not being able to get around easily, a few weeks of sleeping a lot and tiring easily, and probably a good month before I could sleep in my side which was irritating!

What was much better Than I expected was wound care - super easier to look after which I was worried about and good waterproof dressings so could shower etc which made me feel human!

Worst bit was probably the worry about poo! Sorry for tmi but it was something I was worried about as pain killers can constipate you and you're in no position to push given your wounds! Get some lactulose and a strop for you're feet and you'll be fine :)
