Constant deja vu, nausea and a blinding headache - what the hell is wrong with me?

I've had the weirdest, most unpleasant day. Went on a long hike with my family (in Asia so a few hours ahead) and felt terrible throughout, kept having these waves of what I can only describe as deja vu (everything is familiar, though slightly different, and I feel as if I've experienced it all in a dream before). Then the headache came on, still ongoing. Feel totally horrendous. Am home now and have taken ibruprofen which I'm hoping will take the edge off it. Anyone experienced anything like this? Any advice really appreciated, I feel so ill.

I would say you have a migraine.

EdgyMcNervous · 13/01/2019 08:44

I did wonder. I've had really bad headaches before but the deja vu thing is so weird. I've had it the whole day now

I get that sense of deja vu when I really sleep deprived.

EdgyMcNervous · 13/01/2019 09:08

Thanks racecar I've had plenty of sleep though. The headache has improved very slightly with the ibruprofen. But the deja vu persists. My sense of time has got a bit confused too. I feel like I just started this thread 5 mins ago, just been lying on the sofa holding my head in between times...

I would say migraine too.

Migraines are not just the really bad headache as most people understand them, in fact you can have a migraine with no pain at all.

The auro that can accompany a migraine can give a whole range of symptoms, common ones being nauseas/vomiting, light sensitive its and a spaced or deja via sensation.

In addition you can have all manner of sight/sensation/taste/smell issues and even lose control of parts of your body.

LoudBatPerson · 13/01/2019 09:14

Posted to soon - if you look up migraine with aura you should be able to gain a better understanding.

Of course if you are concerned maybe book in a doctors appointment so they can check you over as some deficiencies can also cause similar symptoms.

Broken11Girl · 13/01/2019 09:15

This could be migraine, but I would get checked out. Can you see a doctor urgently today?

EdgyMcNervous · 13/01/2019 09:44

There's a hospital half an hour away but I feel a bit daft asking DH to take me for a headache. The pain has eased off (if I keep my head upright) but still getting the deja vu a bit. Even this thread feels familiar Confused Will look up aura.

Do get yourself checked out, then you can put it all down to migrane. No doctor or hospital would mind you going just to be reassured if nothing else.

Experienced excactly the same last month- went on for a few weeks. Every now and then a really unpleasant de ja vu feeling with lightheadedness. I went to the doctor's. He ordered a blood test, and recommended a trip to the optition. I can sympathise- it's not nice.

HalloumiGus · 13/01/2019 13:12

It does sound like migraine.

EdgyMcNervous · 13/01/2019 13:23

Thanks for all your posts. Nighttime here and I’ve eaten something and am feeling a bit better, though totally wiped out. Going to get some sleep and go for a check-up in the morning

Hope you feel better in the morning.

BigusBumus · 13/01/2019 13:41

Deja vu can be symptoms of some pretty awful things like brain tumours, brain bleeding, stroke etc. So I would get to a doctor pretty quickly if it was me. Hope you're ok xx

bloggingmumny · 13/01/2019 16:10

I get the the dejavu thing if I am really dehydrated

EdgyMcNervous · 14/01/2019 02:32

Morning all (well, here at least). As it happened I was booked for some blood tests today (because I've unintentionally lost quite a bit of weight recently, which I posted about on here a few weeks back). But I was a bit out of sorts after yesterday and, like an idiot, totally forgot to fast for them. The doctor came in to tell me off (!) and I mentioned yesterday's deja vu to her in passing but she was on way to another patient and understandably just looked a bit confused by what I was saying, and the nurse I don't think knew what I meant.

Anyway, I'm going back in tomorrow for the bloods and I'm assuming if anything is amiss it'll show up in those. I was convinced at one point last night that I had temporal lobe epilepsy (because the symptoms sounded familiar to how I felt yesterday and my dad - who died years ago - used to have what in those days were called 'petit mal seizures' where he was just absent for a few moments). But I think deja vu in those circumstances only lasts for a few minutes whereas in migraines it can go on much longer, so it does sound as if migraine is the most likely culprit. Have an awful feeling I'm turning into a super neurotic person who is constantly googling health stuff so I think I will just keep an eye on it and look out for any sign of it happening again.

Thanks again to all of you who've take the time to post - it's much appreciated.

Hi Edgy,

I know this post is a bit old but it does sound like seizures to me and you are probably on track if you are thinking along the lines of Temporal Lobe Epilepsy as Deja vu like you describe is a common focal aware seizure type. Don’t take the words of people on here and write it off as migraine. You really should be seeing a neurologist who specialises in epilepsy preferably as many do not have adequate knowledge in this area, and you should be requesting an ambulatory EEG at the least so there is a good chance you will catch one of these episodes whilst this is happening as otherwise, they won’t be able to diagnose you.

Good luck.
