DS sleeping for hours following tonsilitus

My 7 month old DS has had tonsilitus in the last week (he had a high temp last weekend but since Monday it's been OK). Saw doc on Tuesday who said it was tonsilitus and gave us anti-biotics. BUT I am still worried as this week he has been sleeping for hours during the day (sadly no improvement in night sleeping!). Normally he only sleeps for 3 x 30 mins during the day. Doc yesterday was rather disparaging and told me it was normal for babies to sleep after having an infection. BUT I am still worried. Any comments welcome...

Hate to say the same as doctor - normal for them to sleep loads after infection! It's my favourite bit of when they are sick because you know they're doing the best thing to heal and you FINALLY get some breathing space to catch up on everything that got put on hold when they were crying loads. Best bit for me when DS had chicken pox was he slept loads and since (3 months) has got in the habit of a long nap. He too was a 30 minute napper, so that was a real silver lining!

It's normal for anyone (baby or not) to be extra tired after a virus. Babies just get the opportunity to actually sleep it off rather than dash around trying to get back to normal like the rest of us do...

Or other infection, not just a virus.

my dd had a virus a couple of weeks ago and she was only awake 4 hours out of 24 for 3 days. a friend of mine had tonsilitus a while back and it knocked the stuffing out of her for a couple of weeks. i always believe that when they are ill its best if they are sleeping anyway..they are out of pain then. big hugs to him and hope he feels better soon xx

Many thanks for your advice guys, and for your good wishes. I'll sleep easier tonight knowing that it's all ok.
I think I probably did rationalise things in line with what you say, but when I see him not his perky self, all my common sense goes out of the window and I panic!
Plus, where babies are concerned I tend to put mumsnet mums advice on equal par with the words of doctors!
