Hi, I had a molar extracted on Wed and its been really hurting and my face is swollen. I've been taking paracetamol and ibuprofen over the last 3 days but last night I was up all night.
I've this morning switched to Co Codamol which you can have with Ibuprofen. Is this the best for pain relief? does anyone know please? If its not better by Monday I'll be going straight back to the dentist.

Yes. That combination is strongest OTC. GP can prescribe stronger (30/500mg co codomol) OTC is 8/500mg co-codomol up to 8 a day, combined with 'up to 6 a day' ibuprofen. Follow instructions on packet and good luck with dental pain. It shouldn't be this bad after an extraction so are you sure it's not infected?

Rudgie47 · 12/01/2019 10:11

Thanks for replying, I don't know if its infected or not. Its not bright red at the site and I don't have radiating pain, its not going into my eye or shoulder or anything. It feels to me like when the roots are dying on a tooth. I'd describe it as a severe ache/ really, really sore.

I've been doing all the saltwater rinses and the dentist is very competent so nothing has been left in the hole.

If you buy nurofen plus (ibuprofen and codeine) you will get a higher dose of codeine than in the 8/500 paracetamol/codeine tablets. Take normal paracetamol as well for the same combination of meds.

Sorry you are in pain, dental pain is horrible Thanks

Amber0685 · 12/01/2019 11:57

You can take Nurofen Plus and Cocodamol together. Don't drink alcohol and you might get a bit constipated with all the Codeine so drink lots of water. Nurofen is a no if you have stomach issues or asthma sensitive to it.

PregnantSea · 12/01/2019 12:06

Take ibuprofen, codeine and paracetamol. Read labels to make sure you're taking recommended dose

Rudgie47 · 12/01/2019 12:35

Thank you everyone for replying.
Yes I am reading the labels and following the instructions. I know its easy to overdose on paracetamol by accident. Because its not very effective so people just take more and more!

Nurofen plus definitely the best for dental pain. Combine that with salt water rinses and even cosodyl mouth spray can help until you get back to the dentist.

Rudgie47 · 12/01/2019 14:06

Thanks.

Volterol (diclofenac) instead of the nurofen. It's a much stronger nsaid.

JuniperBeer · 12/01/2019 16:15

@everycloud30 you can’t get voltarol tablets any more otc. Diclofenac linked to heart issues so only gel available

everycloud30 · 12/01/2019 18:16

Ah. Apologies. My husband last bought it for me otc after my caesarean 4 years ago and I remember it being a miracle.

Silvercatowner · 12/01/2019 18:36

Yes, I second Voltarol. It worked for me far better than ibuprofen.

Silvercatowner · 12/01/2019 18:38

you can’t get voltarol tablets any more

Really? That's a shame! Good stuff (unless you have heart issues, obviously....)

WhoTookTheChristmasCookie · 12/01/2019 18:43

Boots ibuprofen and codeine are exactly the same as Nurofen Plus - just cheaper. 200/12.8 mg.

Solpadeine Max tablets are the strongest OTC co-codamol - 500/12.8mg.

If you chemist hop you can buy a pack of each and take two of the Boots + two of the solpadeine at the same time. Gives you 51mg of codeine which is the closest to prescribed co-codamol.

That was my exact formula when I was first struggling with chronic pain and the investigations were taking place (finally got the decent stuff from my doctor in the end!) - worked a charm for me, but I'm not a medical expert.

I'm sure you know this but don't take them for more than 3 days without speaking to a GP.

BabyBlackCat · 12/01/2019 18:48

Do you have a Boots with a pharmacy nearby?

They do an own brand numbing gel called Orajel Extra and it’s brilliant, you apply it directly to the affected tooth and it numbs the pain.

Rudgie47 · 12/01/2019 19:46

Thanks again, the tooth's gone @BabyBlackCat, its the hole that's hurting.

So far today I've had 2 co codamol- small tablets out of 8 per day and 2x400g of Ibuprofen and I think things are settling down a bit. I'll see how it goes tomorrow. I don't think its dry socket as that's meant to be really bad and people are cry with excruciating pain etc.

Ask a chemist for anbesol liquid.

It’s fucking amazing. It’s liquid lidocaine or benzocaine. Designed for teeth/gums

Apply with cotton bud. And then me amazed when your pain goes
