DS fell and hit his front teeth - will they need to come out?

DS fell flat on his face on Tuesday night and did most injury to his mouth.

His lips are huge...his teeth seem to be fine in that they are not wobbly, but the gum above his front 2 top teeth is very black and whilst the beleeding has stopped he can't brush this teeth as it makes the gum bleed.

We have an appointment at the dentist on Monday...but do you think they will have to come out?

probably not. dd1 has bashed her front teeth a few times. one of the teeth is now discoloured, but the dentist says he wont touch it as it will come out of its accord.

How old is your ds?

Kayleigh's ds fell off his bike a few weeks ago and injured his face in a similar way. They were told the teeth would almost certainly have to come out, but once the swelling went down, they decided to leave them. Why not speak to Kayleigh later, she's bound to come on, she can't keep off mn

DS1 has a grey tooth at the front from a similar accident. The dentist( a few days after the bump) said it may discolour but then turn white again or just stay grey and fall out when his milk teeth come out.
It's the nerve being cut suppling(sp?) blood that make the tooth discolour. It would turn white again if the nerve was able to re-build itself.
As it's now been a couple of years since it happened we're waiting for the tooth fairy to come!

Hope your little man if feeling better soon.

How old is he, Eve? Are these milk teeth or adult? If they are milk teeth and are still soundly wedged then they should be OK.

If they're second teeth there is a faint possibility that they will discolour in the future, but they could be unaffected. DS1 collided with a swing frame in the park when he was about 8 and knocked one tooth right out - or at least loosened it, I was away that day, he was with a friend's mum, she took him to his dentist who put it back in place and splinted it to the next tooth, I am eternally grateful to her for that! Anyway he had very little sensation in either of his front teeth for years and the dentist said they might be dead, but 8 years on they are still alive and white so they can stand a lot of bashing apparently. (He also went headfirst over his handlebars at about 7, fat lip and swollen gums then too, ditto!)

See if you can get him to rinse his mouth with tepid salty water, they tell you to do that after extractions, that will help keep the gums clean until he sees the dentist and you can avoid touching them - I'm sure he will be fine - good luck!

the same thing happened to me when I was about 11, front tooth went grey, but my dad said to leave it (he's a dentist), and eventually it turned white again. I woudln't rush into anything. Fingers crossed, hopefully your ds can keep his teeth.

Thanks for that reassurance, his gums look awful...very black and still bleeding a bit.

He is 5 and these are milk teeth..so was more worried about them having to be taken out which would not be pleasant for him.

..he gots loads of sympathy from his new teacher when he went back to school today.
