High platelet count - anyone had this ?

I'm having more tests but of course I'm impatient for answers .

I understand it can be related to infection ? I do have a wobbly tooth which aches but my white cells all seem to be in normal range .

Hoping it's not related to cancer .

High platelets commonest cause is iron deficiency. How high are they?

fleshmarketclose · 08/01/2019 07:57

Exh has polycythaemia rubra vera which means he has very skewed blood counts. Years ago it was only his platelets that were high though. He takes chemotherapy tablets daily to lower his levels.

Spudina · 08/01/2019 08:01

There is a blood disorder called Essential Thrombocythemia (ET) where the body makes too many platelets. If it persists you will need a referral to a haematologist. There is an increased risk of thrombotic events such as DVTs etc with ET. Don't worry OP, it can be controlled with medication. ET is a Myleloproliferative Neoplasm (MPN for short) and there is a good support group called MPN UK if you google it. There is a potential for it to transform into other blood disorders, but that doesn't happen in every case, and most patients just require medication and regular monitoring.

Spudina, yes ehH was initially diagnosed with ET that has developed into rubra vera. He is mostly well in spite of taking chemotherapy tablets for fifteen years now.

Oh ,lots of replies ! Thank you .

The platelet count is only a little raised I think - 496 .But it has never been in that range before .

My serum ferritin is currently 41 ,12 months ago it was 20 and no raised platelet count .

I guess GP being cautious ,I was treated ( chemo/surgery ) for esophageal cancer 5/6 years ago .

Ho hum ,google suggests

Reactive thrombocythemia is the common cause of high platelet count. It accounts for 88% to 97% of thrombocythemia cases in adults, and 100% in children. In adults, acute infection, tissue damage, chronic inflammation and malignancy are the common causes of reactive thrombocythemia. Usually, one or more of these conditions is present in more than 75% of the cases with reactive thrombocythemia
.
I really don't think acute infection, tissue damage, chronic inflammation are applicable ,unless related to dental work .An extraction a couple of months ago and a niggly wobbly tooth that sometimes causes pain ....

Just chatting to myself .

I had this when I was taking tranexamic acid

peridito · 08/01/2019 19:39

Thanks Hannnnnnnxo ,I think tranexamic acid is given to lessen v heavy periods isn't it ? So maybe an example of high platelet count being caused by iron deficiency as YetAnotherThing has mentioned ?
