Im really worried about some blood tests results but I am prone to health anxiety. I have been told all normal but looking at these results they look high. I’m only 42 years old.
eGFR using creatinine (CKD-EPI) per 1.73 square metres 75 mL/min
Serum creatinine level 83 uml

I’m getting myself in a right old state. Are my kidneys not working properly?

I have dug out my recent blood test. The serum creatine should be within 50-120. Mine was 57. The other reading just says >90. No idea what any of this means but you may well be okay.
My iron and vitamin D on the other hand were not so happy. 🙈

Somethingsosimple · 06/01/2019 21:41

Thanks I think that means your gfr reading is above 90 as it is supposed to be and mine is only 75 so I’m now really worried. Why didn’t my GP flag it up?

From what i can gather its only a issue of its low for 3 months plus but could be wrong.

Walkingthroughawall · 06/01/2019 21:59

The results need to be interpreted in the context of your general health and why your GP was doing the test. Kidney function can go up and down quite dramatically without it meaning anything for your long term health and you would not diagnose kidney failure on the basis of 1 test.

Somethingsosimple · 06/01/2019 22:02

Thank you all for replying. These were done a few weeks ago and I haven’t been asked to repeat, I’m not great at drinking so could this effect the results ?

Are you passing urine normally? Is it particularly dark? Any aches or pains in that region?

People do vary in their parameters; my platelets are below the normal level, for example, but have been for over a year and doctor reckons that is now normal for me.

ChristmasSnow · 06/01/2019 22:08

Your creatine is fine

Your EGFR is a little low but if you have no other symptoms its not to bad.
Have you got any urine symptoms?
Protein, blood, cola coloured, bubbly?

Could be for lots of reasons, without it being kidney disease, maybe a little extra weight, dehydration, certain types of meds, getting over an illness / coming down with something.

I wouldnt overly be concerned about those results at all but adk your doctor to repeat in a couple of weeks

YetAnotherThing · 06/01/2019 22:30

GFRs can fluctuate and I think NICE guidelines say not to diagnose kidney disease unless persistently

Somethingsosimple · 06/01/2019 22:38

Thanks for reminding me yetanotherthing - I went for one 6 months ago so I’ve just checked all ok then and over 90, which makes me feel a bit better. I’ve been taking Zantac for reflux so wonder if this has changed results too. Will try not to worry to much

WALKINGTHROUGHAWALL

Wether or not thry diagnose kidney failure on one test, which they dont....
A EGFR of 75 is nowhere near kidney failure

Walkingthroughawall · 07/01/2019 06:15

@ChristmasSnow ...thanks - I’m familiar with the basics, which is why I made general comments about kidney failure (which is what the OP’s question seems to suggest they’re worried about) rather than a specific one about that particular eGFR.

Somethingsosimple · 07/01/2019 06:35

Sorry if I confusing - I’m worried about my kidneys. My blood test was done by my gp as I’ve been having reflux and felt generally tired. My GP said my blood test results were normal no further action required. I’ve been looking at them and getting myself worried. I do suffer from major anxiety though.

OP posts:
BatFaced · 07/01/2019 08:39

You need to trust your GP when he/she has told you no further action required and the results are acceptable

If you can't do this then seek help for the health anxiety, not chase up more tests for a kidney condition that doesn't exist. Getting to the root of the anxiety is key here because in a months time, you'll have moved onto something else health related

madamefraser · 07/01/2019 08:48

I agree with the above - both tests are within normal limits and egfr is also calculated with weight , muscle mass etc , if you are male or female . I would see your GP and talk about your anxieties around your health .
A good GP will listen and hopefully be able to reassure you , or if they think there is a need for further testing they'll do that.

JustMabel · 07/01/2019 09:55

I’m not great at drinking so could this effect the results?

Yes. My GP told me to drink more water.

Somethingsosimple · 07/01/2019 13:24

Thanks for replies. That’s interesting Justmabel was that for creatinine levels?

I know I definitely I’m struggling with health anxiety. I currently waiting to see someone through let’s talk but I’m told it might take 6 months. I’m trying to keep myself really busy today to try and keep myself occupied from thinking about my kidneys and all sorts of other anxieties.

OP - I've got to go out now but will PM you later.

My eGFR was much lower than yours and I totally get you on the health anxiety - it's a bugger :(
