Hi all in agony for 2 days swollen back wisdom tooth! Can barely swallow and can't eat solids.
Had to go to out of hours dentist today and dentist took one look at tooth and just said it's a bad wisdom tooth infection and I will need two sets of antibiotics and that was it. My mum was surprised they didn't suggest they take it out ?? X

The dentist wouldn’t be able to go anything until the infection is cleared up. I have occasional wisdom tooth issues (I’m 52) and my dentist has said it’ll be a heck of a job getting my tooth out. so just treating any problems as I go will be far less traumatic for me.

Water salt water gargle, as much as you like, it draws the infection out fast.

I had this while I was pregnant. 4 separate instances.

They wouldn't remove it until after I'd had the baby, so i opted to have all my wisdom teeth out under GA. fuck that, the pain was easily worse than labour.

They can't remove any teeth if there is infection. Did he give you a prescription? If not ring gp but I'd hope he had done so.
It'll be up to your regular dentist to xray and decide whether to remove one infection is gone.
Along with rinsing with warm salt water, take a warm hot water bottle to bed and lay it against the cheek where the pain is etc.

Good luck and I hope the pain eases soon x

I'm having problems with a wisdom tooth which has a cavity. Just before Xmas I had horrendous toothache and ended up at the emergency dentist. Was given a course or amoxicillin, which made it feel better after about 48 hours. Have since seen my regular dentist who plans to filll it at the end of the month. I'm hoping it holds out until then, I can feel it niggling. Your dentist can't treat it until the infection has cleared up. It will feel much much better once the antibiotics kick in. In the meantime keep on top of the pain killers, my dentist recommended alternating co-codamol and ibuprofen every 2 hours.

The debit should have explained a bit more but an OOH dentist is just not the place to have a wisdom tooth out. It's emergency management until you can get to your own dentist and make a plan.

Debit FFS *dentist.

Just because you have an infection in your wisdom tooth doesn’t mean it has to be taken out. They can’t whilst you have an infection anyway.

They generally can't get you numb enough when there's a lot of infection to take the tooth out. Once the infection has settled book an appointment to get it out.

SpoonBlender · 06/01/2019 20:26

I've been through this. As OPs have said, they won't do anything while the infection is in place (unless it's an emergency like it's crumbled apart). Get the antibiotics down you, and set up an appointment with your normal dentist - they'll probably schedule it for when you'll finish the antibiotics course.

Good luck - ibuprofen is helpful as a painkiller, being an anti-inflammatory it reduces the swelling that causes so much pain.

Like others said, wisdom teeth not taken out at emergency appt. I needed to go to dental hospital, have x days and discuss with the consultant. I opted to have all 4 out under GA. Drilling of bone and stitches were required. Not all extractions are the same. My sister had two out with a local and it was fine.
