Coil strings...

Mummysharkdoodoodoo · 05/01/2019 06:46

I had the coil about 3 months ago. The day after having it fitted I couldn’t feel the strings so I went back and they had tucked up by the cervix.
Roll on until yesterday, I forgot to go back for my 6 week check so I thought id have ago feeling for them.

They are quite long. Well I think so? I can feel them on the tip of my middle finger if I put that finger in (tmi 😩).

Is that ok? They feel Abit long, I can feel around them and I’m guessing it’s mt cervix.

Just be glad you can feel them!

My strings weren’t there at my 6 week check and an ultrasound scan showed they’d receeded back up through my cervix and were wrapped around the device.

It didn’t stop the coil working but as you can imagine, it caused a lot of difficulties when I wanted it removed.

If you think they’re too long maybe you go back to the person who inserted it and ask them to check and cut the strings?

I had to have day surgery and be put under to have mine removed after many attempts from different drs to remove mine all because the strings were too short.

PeanuttyButter · 05/01/2019 10:39

First coil dislodged, second the strings were too short.. that was fun (and painful) when I had to have it changed. Couldn’t feel the strings from day 1 but it was ok for 5 years. My last coil I’ve had nothing but pain from it. After 18 months my strings vanished and ultrasound says it’s in place but I’m having so much pain. Waiting for a GA to have it removed and re inserted. They want to do a hysteroscopy at the same time but as I’m nulliparous they want to do it GA.

I've had my coil exactly a year now I can't and never have been able to feel the strings
I've been back a couple of Times to make sure they are in place and they are. It's scary when you can't feel them though.

Overlapping in length with a fully inserted finger is good, so you can check easily. Sometimes they hide, like you found - don't panic, try again later.

Apart from the obvious possible aggravation when removing one, if they're overly short they can be a bit, er, stabby to DP's softer parts while DTD. Had that a few times with one mirena, it must have been travelling up and down a bit as it wasn't every time! DP survived without changing it, but I've always made sure they're longer since.

Advice please! I've been advised by my Dr to have the mirena cool fitted as my body isn't reacting well to the combined pill and to say I'm nervous and worried is an understatement.
I have read so many worrying reviews on bad side effects etc from constant bleeding to continuous pain.
This has also been advised by my Dr as I do not want any more children and they believe this is a better option than sterilisation ... Any advice is appreciated

With my first one, the insertion although uncomfortable, was not painful. It did wonders for my periods as they went from being 7 days of heavy bleeding to becoming 3 days of really light bleeding. I had that Mirena in for about 3.5 years with no problems with the device; no side effects and no pain. However, shortly after having it put in, my strings receeded back up my cervix and into my womb so it was problematic getting it removed.

My second Mirena was a very painful insertion but that was down to the method of the GP - it was just brutal and I actually had tears in my eyes. It was the polar opposite of when I’d had my first one out in. This time round I practically bled continuously for 8 months but that was because I was breast feeding at the time and the GP said it was the hormones involved with BF clashing with the hormone in the Mirena, or something like that. I had it taken out after about 9 months because we wanted to TTC baby number 2.

Im currently deciding whether to have another Mirena as my periods have recently returned after baby number 2 and they are horrendous!! I’m still breast feeding at the moment though and after my previous experience I won’t have another Mirena until I have stopped breast feeding.

Overall, I have been happy with the Mirena as a contraceptive. It doesn’t suit anyone but I would always recommend someone to try it.

QueenofmyPrinces · 06/01/2019 05:23

I meant to say that it doesn’t suit everyone - not that it doesn’t suit anyone Grin

I'm concerned about the bleeding and spotting afterwards sorry for tmi!! But thank u for your advice lovely x

SpoonBlender · 06/01/2019 20:01

It's likely to be fine Welshgirl - remember you only hear stories from the people who have a bad time. You can always have it out again if it turns out you're an unlucky one.

Lizsmum · 06/01/2019 20:12

I had one when they were first introduced and kept it for years and years - much longer than the recommended time. In fact I only had it removed when I thought I was probably post menopausal. It was a bit of a guess as periods had stopped a few months after getting the mirena. No problems at all - I thoroughly recommend it.

Mummysharkdoodoodoo · 06/01/2019 21:19

I have the copper one and love it! Although periods are heavy but no heavier than before, I use a moon cup though. No other symptoms apart from the strings 😂
