Help - is anyone out there - I'm really worried about dd

She was breathing heavily when I put her to bed, and then she was really unsettled. She woke up about 11 making a really horrible wheezy noise, and was really unresponsive for about 20mins. Have spoken to the NHS direct dr, and have been told to keep an eye on her and take her to hospital if it happens again. Dh won't be home for another hour, and I'm frightened to go to sleep in case dd has breathing difficulties.

the unresponsiveness sounds worrying. is there any way you could take her to a&e now or do you have other dcs to consider?

Kaloo20 · 28/06/2007 00:38

Sorry to hear this Roskva
Take a pillow and sleep on the floor in her room (I'm sure we've all done it at sometime)

remember to leave a note for DH so he knows where to find you

I hope she's OK

Kaloo20 · 28/06/2007 00:39

it does - unrespnsive ie still asleep and dreamlike (sleep walking type unresponsive) or unresponsive as in floppy ...

PenelopePitstops · 28/06/2007 00:40

yeah second ppls advice, sleep with her, as a mother you will noticce any changes, wierd as it soiunds

hope she is ok

If I take her to A&E I have to drive nearly 20 miles with her in the back of the car and no-one to come with me.

She was just really strange when she woke up coughing/wheezing/choking - she was breathing noisily and her eyes were open but she seemed unaware of everything around her and was very relaxed/floppy. She came to properly and started making sounds and noticing her surroundings about 20 minutes later, when the nurse called me back, and I have spoken to a doctor since. She's had some less scary coughy/wheezy fits since, but nothing as bad.

She's taken 4oz of her late bottle, and doesn't seem to have a temperature - the bloody thermometre isn't working and I can't open it to put a new battery in.

And I've put the travel cot up in my bedroom. Currently sat next to it with computer on the bed, and her breathing sounds normal at the moment.

Wish I didn't live in the middle of nowhere.

try a normal thermometer and nhs direct again also plentyl of fluids even if its just water and hoping for the bect

Devonshire · 28/06/2007 00:49

you poor thing rovska, there's nothing worse than a poorly lo and no one to consult/worry with. hang on in there, your dp will be home soon. like the others said, stay in the room and keep watch or doze.

good night and take care xxx

Roskva · 28/06/2007 00:50

I would if I had one. Dh the resident hypochondriac has one in his bag, but that's with him.

I would phone an ambulance if she's wheezy/unresponsive. I don't want to worry you but my dd went from a bit wheezy to full blown hospitalized asthma attack in 2 hours. If you call the ambulance, it's the quickest way of someone medical getting to your house and if they're at all concerned, they will take her into hospital straight away. Don't worry about wasting their time - they would far rather see babies as early as possible before things get too bad.

PenelopePitstops · 28/06/2007 00:53

yeah like zog says try 999, how long til dp is back?

Roskva · 28/06/2007 00:56

At the moment she's sound asleep and snoring - she usually snores, and at least I can hear her

Hopefully he'll be here in about half an hour. He was 2 hours away when I last spoke to him at about 11.30.

Roskva · 28/06/2007 00:59

I couldn't sleep now if I tried. Fortunately I'm still on maternity leave, so not working tomorrow.

PenelopePitstops · 28/06/2007 01:02

good news
ask him what he thidnks and if dd has changed

Kaloo20 · 28/06/2007 01:06

Just come back to this thread. Don't like the sound of the unresponsiveness, especially if she's a baby. The thing is, it may be difficult to get meds out to the house if she's sleeping agian now.

Take care (try and sleep for a while if you can)

Balls · 28/06/2007 01:07

Roskva - some things to suggest:

  1. put a pillow under her mattress at the head end to raise it slightly
  2. count her resps - ie the number of breaths per minute with a watch and write it down. It is useful and relevant information to give to a nurse or doctor over the phone
  3. pull up her vest and see if her chest is labouring to breathe in and out - ie a sort of bellows effect - again, useful info for the medical bods if you talk to them again
  4. if in any doubt, please take her to A&E
Devonshire · 28/06/2007 14:02

Roskva - how is your daughter today? hope you had a peaceful night
xx

Roskva · 28/06/2007 15:58

Thanks everyone for your support last night. She woke up again wheezing horribly, so dh and I took her to a&e. The on-call paed diagnosed croup and kept her in for the rest of the night, as apparently it gets worse in the early morning, which it did. Anyway, she's much better now, but still very grizzly. I just noticed that the 2 front teeth that have been threatening for weeks have poked through her gums, so that doesn't help her. Anyway, I really appreciate having folk to talk in the middle of the night.

OP posts:
Devonshire · 28/06/2007 19:19

glad everything worked out ok. croup can be awful, esp for little babies.
hope she and her teeth feel ok soon!

Zog · 28/06/2007 22:01

So glad you went to a&e Roskva - wishing her a speedy recovery

PenelopePitstops · 29/06/2007 01:24

rovska sounds like you did the right thing. all the best for speedy recovery
