Getting relative discharged to our house in different part of England

I have a parent in hospital at the moment and the likelihood is that they will need several weeks of treatment with probably an operation. There is a chance they could make a full recovery but they will certainly need a lot of help for months. They might also find their activities reduced in future because of this health problem.

We are settled, with pre- and in school children plus jobs etc, in another part of the country, probably a 6-7 hour drive away, except I don't drive so it is a full day on trains or buses. There isn't really anyone local to my parent who could look after them, and, although they won't need full on nursing care, they will need some help and someone to be around. It would be much easier if they moved in with us, at least for a bit.

Has anyone had any experience of this kind of situation? Were you able to get aftercare from a different hospital to the one where they were treated? Or a hospital transfer? I would be very grateful for any advice. Thanks.

Hi, you can enquire about being transferred to your local hospital with your parents consent of course. If the plan is to discharge home with no further intervention only check ups you would have to speak to the consultant to get their approval as to if they are happy to transfer the care to another hospital/consultant. They would need to register with your local gp even if only temporary so that they are able to receive their medications etc, registering with your gp would make it easier also if they needed treatment by a district nurse etc if they are to be household for some time. You can ask the hospital to make a referral to social services for care input if this is needed.
