'Resetting' gut flora....

Miljah · 29/12/2018 12:37

Has anyone attempted to do this?

By which I mean, deliberately introduce 'good' bacteria/flora into your stomach (thus intestines).

I know many people take pro-biopics daily, but what else might one eat or drink, or avoid, for that matter!

My issue is more 'social'- at any time, randomly, over the past couple of years, my gut makes the most appalling loud noises! Bubbling, sudden deep groans, burbling. It's really embarrassing, to the extent I won't eat in a silent staff room and meetings have me on edge all the time!

No pain or D and V, just these random, stupid groany, rumbly noises!

I am wondering if I improve my gut flora, it might make my digestion quieter?

I drink diluted raw apple cider vinegar and have live yoghurt and kefir to try and help mine. No idea if it makes any difference though (which probably means it doesn't!) , although I do like them so it's not a chore to have them in my diet.

Holidayshopping · 30/12/2018 12:55

No, I haven’t-but I suffer exactly like this-it’s awful. I have been to the GP about it but they seemed to find it funny Confused so I never went back. I was thinking about trying a wheat-free diet in the new year to see if that helped.

I avoid quiet places and dread meetings.

There is a good podcast on this on 'the doctor's kitchen' episode 4 on fibre (sorry can't link) that you might find interesting. I had major bowel surgery last year and have been trying to eat to help mine.

Jackshouse · 30/12/2018 13:04

I read something the other day saying you need to eat 30 different types of plant based foods a week to increase the range of flora. It suggested things like 4 seed mix or bean mixes to easily increase this.

fromthefloorboardsup · 30/12/2018 13:16

Do you eat a lot of dairy? When I used to, I'd get these sorts of gurgling sounds. I think it was wind! It's really embarrassing though, I agree.

It might be something you eat that your gut struggles to digest?

Holidayshopping · 30/12/2018 13:39

I don’t really have much dairy-so I don’t think it’s that causing it in me. These are interesting responses though.

Warning - TMI. I read somewhere that tests putting poo from a healthy person into the wonky stomach had proven successful. Think I'd prefer to go the kefir and sauerkraut and pro-biotic route.

Two pro-biotics, lactobacillus and bifidobacterium, produce GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid), a tranquilising neurotransmitter that can reduce anxiety. - even if your stomach rumbles, it won't bother you Grin

Miljah · 30/12/2018 19:30

I'm in health care, and I know about a poor person who had intractable C Diff. They gave him a massive dose of antibiotics to kill his gut flora, then a 'poo-bomb', to re-colonise his gut with 'good' bacteria and flora. The bomb was harvested flora/bacteria from a healthy person.

Apparently very successfully!

I think we'll see a lot more of this.

I have found porridge for breakfast and those small milk drinks each day has massively improved my stomach health.

ShadyLady53 · 30/12/2018 19:51

VSL#3 works WONDERS. It’s a very expensive probiotic but has worked better than anything I’ve ever tried.

ARoomSomewhere · 30/12/2018 19:52

I had stomach surgery last year and would like to know what to do to improve my gut flora too.
DD brought home a bug from school and it took me 8 weeks to get over it and i am still not right.

Skyejuly · 30/12/2018 19:53

Bone broth

Lovelydovey · 30/12/2018 19:53

Porridge every day helps!

Which milk drinks do you have?

milkmoustache · 30/12/2018 19:53

Michael Moseley has a couple of helpful books about this, properly researched and with recipes, called the Clever Guts diet.

MotherFeeder · 30/12/2018 19:57

Years ago I had tummy issues. If I remember I was advised to take a really good probiotic /acidophilus to reset my gut flora.

Bumblebee39 · 30/12/2018 20:09

Probiotics, live yoghurt, kefir, sauerkraut
Reduce unfermented dairy products, reduce processed foods and sugar
Increase green foods and drinking tea (coffee can cause issues in the gut)
Drink lots of water

I don't know if it works however because I have never stuck to it properly so there's not much point unless you are very committed

ARoomSomewhere · 30/12/2018 22:44

thanks for suggestions :)
