Keratosis pilaris

We have self diagnosed but pretty sure that this is what 17 year old DS has. He is known for his very hot baths and showers which we now know can make this condition much worse so they've been cut back on.

Does anyone have any experience of this please and can suggest any suitable creams etc?
Any diet changes he might try?

TIA

Ameliorate lotion has got rid of my KP completely.

applepineapple · 28/12/2018 17:47

Another one coming along to say Ameloriate Grin

Poundland foot cream worked on my arms

Klobuchar · 28/12/2018 17:49

Urea is the active ingredient you’re looking for here (which the cream recommended by the PPs does indeed have)

Urea is often found in cheap foot cream and works on KP as well as more expensive stuff.

I switched to Dove soap instead I’d shower gel and it has completely removed this from my shins. I had it on my arms as a teen and I have scrubbed with either homemade salt scrub twice a week or Japanese wash clothes daily and have had none on my arms now for over 30 years. But the legs still had a little until I got rid of the shower gel.

Sausagefingers9 · 28/12/2018 17:52

Can I hijack and ask if this is KP?

I had no idea about hot baths not helping.

I would say it was. If its any consolation it seems to get better/disappear as you get older.

PasteSandwiches · 28/12/2018 17:54

Watching with interest as my DH has this on his shins.

Sausagefingers9 · 28/12/2018 17:55

I had it on my arms which have got better but my legs get worse the older I get.
Going to try the creams suggested. Do you exfoliate first?

SchnitzelVonKrumm · 28/12/2018 18:51

Yes I'd say that's KP. I only exfoliate occasionally. The active ingredient is lactic acid and it's also v good for preventing ingrown hairs.

MrsMoastyToasty · 28/12/2018 18:54

I found that mine started to clear up once I cut gluten from my diet.

Weathergirl1 · 28/12/2018 21:10

I tried urea cream as recommended on here and it made a slight difference but it's pretty much gone away completely since I started taking Omega3 fish oils (for a completely separate reason). Very occasionally I get the odd bump/ingrown hair. I've also noticed an improvement in my eyes being less dry. Omega3 deficiency is actually very common in western diets!

tropicskincare.com/products/perfect-skin

Designed specifically for KP which I have been suffering from for years I got it for my bday and after the first application with the exfoliating mitt it made such a difference. Expensive but totally worth it and a little goes a long way.

PoohBearsHole · 28/12/2018 21:28

Also wheat can be a huge factor in KP. Does get better with age though!

Kardashianlove · 28/12/2018 21:31

Switching to only using soap got rid of mine.

Neurotrash · 29/12/2018 21:07

Watch the Dr Dray (dermatologist) YouTube film on it, it was extremely helpful for me.

Very linked to hormones and dry skin for me, so this time of year it's bad and I've been bad after both children. Must say I've personally found aveeno excellent esp if put on damp skin.

mckenzie · 31/12/2018 09:33

Thanks for the extra posts. I saw a local Boots pharmacist on Saturday who was very helpful. She mentioned sugar too and as DS used to be addicted to Coke (not quite addicted but drank way to much) the KP should start to improve now that he’s been over 3 months Coke free.
Ive got a new soap, a mild exfoliatant and some cream with urea in it, plus some Omega vitamins.
Now we just need DS to use all these things. Grin
He cut out the hot baths last week as soon as we learnt that was an issue and already we can see a difference in his arms.
