i have just been given trimethoprim tablets by my GP to cure an ongoing sore throat. when i googled it (i know, fatal mistake), they kept just mentioning Septrin, which seems to be a mix of the one i have and something else. i am allergic to Septrin. does this mean i could be allergic to the trimethoprim? my Gp does know i my allergies - he wouldnt have prescribed it if i could have an allergy, would he?
TIA for any info.

my advice would be to phone NHS direct and get some advice before you take it. Im sure your GP would not prescribe if it was contra indicated but lets face it, he may have forgotten about the allergies, unlikely but do you really fancy a trip to A&E with a face like a kipper? Just because a medication is in the same family though doesnt mean it will cause the same reaction but it would be worth getting it checked if you are worried. If NHS direct cant help how about an all night pharmacy, the pharmacist will definately know.

Can you ring your GP?? Should be ok though...septrin was ghastly and not used any more though similar group of meds shouldn't (theoretically have same reaction) though am not convinced of use of trimethoprim for recurrent sore throat ??

thanks macdoodle - i did wonder why i'd been given it when it says its for chest infections and UTIs but i have no medical training and he has!! will try and phone to ask. didnt know they didnt use Septrin anymore.
