Why is my metabolism so crap?

I have always easily gained weight, no matter what. In 7 months, I gained 3 stone after having a baby. I've lost 4stone following SW. I have left SW now as it was messing with my head and decided to just follow through my own lifestyle change but all within reason! Today I've had:

Breakfast- coffee with 1 sugar and semi skimmed milk, 1 slice of toast with lighter butter and orange marmalade, a pear and some mango OR I will have original porridge oats/cornflakes with a banana.

Lunch: 1 chocolate chip brioche, a mocha half water and half semi skimmed milk (using sweetener), and a packet of smoked bacon crisps OR I would have a roasted chicken and salad sandwich if I had cereal for breakfast.

Snack:
Satsuma, a banana and a yogurt and strawberry biscuit things I get from Aldi. They come in a pack of 2 but I only have one and share the other one with my DS.

Dinner: chicken and noodle stir fry with some rocket salad and sometimes a small dessert for after, usually a rice pudding pot or a magnum. It depends! Not always though. I always make food from scratch and always watch my portion sizes and carb content.

My portions are not big. I always eat in a large bowl, but it is smaller than a plate.

But I've still managed to put on 9lb in 2 months :( I get my exercise in as I work as a cleaner doing deep cleans and using big industrial machines and hoovers which really does make me work up a sweat!

Could this be a health problem or is it just the way I am? My sisters and brothers all have brilliant metabolisms and never gain weight! I must be unlucky :(

Do you drink any water? It speeds my metabolism up

Crisps and chocolate brioche isn’t a great lunch if you’re having it regularly. Could you have a big salad with some protein - smoked mackerel, tuna, cottage cheese etc ?

Replace the magnum with fruit most days?

KingIrving · 23/12/2018 18:38

More than metabolism you might have an insulin sensitivity.
Could you cut your processed snacks for a week and see it it makes a difference.
Having in the same day:
Chocolate brioche
Crisps
Biscuits
Magnum .... is not surprisingly making you gain weight.

Some people gain weight more easily than others, and I might mean that you can only have crisps once a week. Be careful with the sweeteners , they have been linked to weight gain as they promote the wrong bacteria in the gut. Try to cut the sweeteners to zero and slowly adapt your diet to a less sweet one. No sugar in drinks and less sweet treats at every meal/snack.

Crisps, chocolate brioche, magnum...?

WonderWoman2019 · 23/12/2018 18:51

How many calories do you think you're eating in a day? What you've posted suggests it's a whole load more than required for weight maintenance never mind loss.

Knittink · 23/12/2018 18:51

It's not your metabolism, it's the fact that you are eating a load of sugar. Fruit is fine, but on top of magnums, rice puddings, sugar in coffee, marmalade, yoghurt, strawberry biscuit, chocolate brioche etc that is a hell of a lot of sugary stuff. You probably need to up your protein and veg.

Intermittent fasting might help with metabolism

WhenLifeGivesYouLemonsx · 23/12/2018 20:15

Thank you everyone. I've read back and realised that I am indeed eating too much sugar! I will cut it down and start eating more healthy and swapping sugar with fruit. Magnum is only an occasional treat! Forgot to mention that in my post.

Don't forget, fruit is full of sugar too! You should limit fruit to one or two pieces per day, especially if tropical fruit (citrus, bananas, pineapple etc.) Berries are lower in sugar.

Jaimx86 · 23/12/2018 21:21

Seems high in carbs/sugar and is a lot more than I eat despite working out intensively 1-2hours a day. E.g. I cycled 48km today and that only burnt off 850 calories. If you’re relatively small and light, you don’t need many calories to function day to day.

WhenLifeGivesYouLemonsx · 24/12/2018 07:30

@Jaimx86 I am just under 5ft so I'm quite petite, although about a stone overweight but that's where my body is happy so I am not fussed about that. I have used the calorie calculator and it does say I need under 2000 calories a day to maintain so I think I'm going to write how many calories I'm eating in a diary and then it'll give me a rough idea how many I am eating per day. I am doing a lamb stew in the SC but it is 90% fresh vegetables so I think that's healthy enough if I don't eat dumplings with them (boo!) SadXmas Wink
