Allergic to alcohol?

Just wondering if anyone else has ever experienced this. The pay month or so I've woken up a few times with big red swollen lips, sometimes covered in yellow crust and often very painful. I've recently realised I only seem to wake up with this when I've had alcohol the night before (regardless of amount/what I'm drinking).

Has anyone had this before? It's very strange. My lips are only swollen and crusty when I wake up and after 30 mins-1 hour are back to normal. I haven't drank anything new alcohol wise either, and nothing too heavy (only ever low alcohol fruity wines or a small fruit/alcohol mixer). It's very strange!

Have you tried something that isn't fruity or a fruity mixer? A shot of plain vodka maybe just in the interests of an experiment?

If you want to know for sure that is. Allergies probably should be investigated properly in case they get worse.

I'll try that, thanks! Just seems very odd, I'm not a heavy drinker at all but like a glass of wine or cider every so often and have usually been fine. Very strange Confused

Be careful. My brother had this and it developed into a full blown allergy. He went home one night and tried one small glass of whiskey from a bottle somebody had bought him for his birthday and had a full on anaphylatic reaction - couldn't breathe, passed out etc. He now can't touch alcohol. Prior to that he'd just be an occasional drinker.

I'd suggest going to the GPs to confirm what's going on. It can honestly be very dangerous.

I have a friend with an alcohol allergy. She can have a couple of lagers very occasionally, but even small amounts of wine or spirits make her very sick (vomiting) the next day and she has a sort of hives reaction - a rash, swollen face & lips etc.

catnour · 23/12/2018 13:24

@YourVagesty oh that's so scary! I'll get it checked out to confirm, just find it very weird how it's just came out of nowhere.

Does it look like an allergic reaction? Sorry for gross pic!

I suppose you can have an allergy to anything so if you are only like this after drinking then it could the alcohol or something in the type of alcohol you are drinking.

I personally have to avoid alcohol as I have a very low tolerance. The room can start spinning after a chocolate liqueur.

Not drinking isn’t the end of the world.

A glass of wine would have me knocked out completely legless or dancing on the table.

Hard to tell from that photo OP but I'm loving the pigtails Grin

Really you should see a doctor and insist on allergy testing, not just don't drink alcohol anymore. Allergies can get serious all of a sudden.

Lol thank you @gamerchick saves me having to curl my hair everyday Grin

Ok thanks, I will make an appointment after xmas. Just annoying as I know most people tend to buy me wine for xmas and now I'm too scared to drink anything Xmas Blush

I have a wine allergy and have red/white blotches all over my chest, neck and upper arms with even a few sips of wine. With me it's obviously not the alcohol as I can drink other things, and I'm not allergic to grapes either.

I guess there are other ingredients in drinks which people can be sensitive to?

catnour · 23/12/2018 21:13

@Chocolatedeficitdisorder yes that's true, just not sure what else it could be. Has happened with normal wine, fruity wine, different ciders, wine/prosecco based cocktails and vodka based cocktails.

Found this on the Mayo Clinic website

*Other ingredients commonly found in alcoholic beverages, especially in beer or wine, can cause intolerance reactions. These include:

Sulfites or other preservatives
Chemicals, grains or other ingredients
Histamine, a byproduct of fermentation or brewing*
