Hello :) I've had ingrown toenails since I was 5 years old. I've never had them treated whether they were infected or not. I live in Wales, UK, I called a private podiatrist who quoted £400 pounds for treatment but I don't work due to disability so can't afford that. I can't cope with the pain and pus anymore but I have no idea where to start looking for help. My gp thinks I'm a fat drug addict so I have no faith in her and I can't change doctors as they are my local gp and I cannot travel further afield. Does anyone have any advice on how I get help for this? I don't need advice on how to trim the nail/how short my nails are as I know these things. Has anyone suffered with similar? Thanks 😊

I can’t see any pictures, but there are some YouTube podiatry videos that show you how to diy. I’d press your GP though, I think you can have th nail bed killed so they stop growing at the sides

Sorry, cross posted with th pictures.

Your nails look sunken into your toe - have they always been like that?

MidiMitch · 19/12/2018 22:05

Blimey - go to the gp ASAP. That looks so painful.

I can't tell if the pictures are posting!

An NHS podiatrist can take the nail off under local anaesthetic and treat the nail bed with phenol to stop it regrowing. If you want to keep the nail they can do a wedge excision to take a thin slice off each side, so you have a narrower nail but it can’t ingrow at the edges. Ask for a referral from your GP practice.

Hermione Ive seen the tutorials they're very good but my pictures would explain why I cannot fix this at home lol they are only sunk because they're so short. When they grow normal length it is pure agony and I already have to walk on the sides of my feet.
midi it is incredibly painful but my gp won't address any health concerns of mine as she believes me to be a 'fat addict' so that's no good.
I'm a T2 diabetic and I've been pondering if there's such a thing as an NHS podiatrist who would see me to remove these and use the acid stuff because it's dangerous for diabetics to have infections like this? :/

I had mine done by a chiropodist was only about £30 I think. Have you tried a few places?
But yes really NHS should be doing this go back to GP

MrsApplepants · 19/12/2018 22:12

OMG no help but Christ that looks painful. You poor thing

BrylcreamBeret · 19/12/2018 22:12

babdoc I'm so glad to hear there are NHS podiatrists! Do I write a short note to my gp asking for a referral? They tend to require everything on writing.

If you are diabetic you must get it seen to!

Our hospital has a Diabetic Foot Clinic, somewhere like that would help you
