Advice re painkillers - help!

DH has an abscess on a tooth. The dentist has prescribed drop-dead abs and codeine and said he can take otc painkillers too. DH is in dreadful pain.

Because I had read (possibly on here) that paracetamol and ibuprofen taken together work better than if taken separately, he has been taking one of ach every 4 hours together with the codeine.

He is still in awful pain.

He is taking these tablets 4 times a day. It occurred to me that he can take up to 8 of each otc tablet in a day. So can he take one of each otc every 2 hours, thus bringing the dosage up to the max daily intake? If it's OK to do that I think it would make quite a lot of difference.

Madmum5811, heaven knows why the dentist did it, but it was a few years ago and a different dentist, different practice.

Re ibuprofen, he knows the max dose and hasn't gone past it, though it's quite tempting!

If you are on prescription strength ibuprofen you can have up to 2400mg in 24 hours so your other half could take an extra dose of ibuprofen at night if he wanted, just make sure he has something to eat before he takes it. If he can manage with less paracetamol/codeine during the day he can take 3 at night as long as he doesn't go over the 8 paracetamol limit in 24 hours, my ex husband has MS & takes the paracetamol/codeine as part of his pain relief, the pain nurse told him he could do that to get a better nights sleep. Try & prop him up in bed as that stops some of the pressure building up in the abcess.

Thanks Nat. It's otc ibuprofen so 200mg per tablet. As he's taking 2 x 3 times a day, that makes total dose of 1200mg a day so he could increase it? It does mess up his tummy a bit so he always eats before he takes them, atm a bowl of natural live yoghurt with a banana mashed into it. He's still getting indigestion, but that may also be the anti-biotics.

He's just left for the dentist, very worried, still in lots of pain with a very swollen face. He slept a bit better last night (I didn't! I'm really quite anxious about him). Anyway, fingers crossed.
