NHS Complaint

Hi everyone I need some advice regarding the NHS and possibly pals.

The problem is two fold. During the later stage of my pregnancy (3rd Trimester) I suffered with some minor heart issues that were monitored. I was sent for several ECGs and wore a 24 hour tape after the baby was born. Two weeks ago I met with the GP and because of the results of the tape she said she would refer me for another 24 hour tape.

When delivering my baby I sustained a third degree tear. This was repaired in theatre and I was told when being discharged it was healing well and I would be invited back in six weeks for a check up. I had stitches checked twice by Midwifes since then and have been told it is healing well but when I went for our six week check up at 7 weeks my GP was concerned that I hadn’t been invited back to gynaecology for a check by them and said she would make a referral.

I got a letter from the doctors today wanted to discuss my results but I haven’t had the second 24 hour tape yet. When I rang and spoke to reception they said neither referrals had been made and I had to contact the hospital myself.

My questions are:

Is this normal? For me to now have to contact the hospital?

Would a complaint be taken seriously and in regards to the Gynae who would the complaint be against?

Are the hospital likely to tell me I need a referral?

The tape bit sounds dodgy but the other bit doesn't

I think your complaint needs to go to your GP practice. Specifically, your complaint is that the referrals have not been made despite being told they would be.

Not sure about the lack of contact from gynae. I wonder whether it was your GPs opinion that they should have checked you again rather than standard protocol?

Are they saying they sent referral letters to the hospitals?

In my experience patients are often expected to do their own admin and chase things up. It makes me uncomfortable, you sound switched on but there are some very vulnerable people in the community who can't cope with it and miss out on healthcare.

I was told by the hospital I would have a six week check but never heard anything from them.

I was told referrals would be made but they have not been made. I’m happy to do the chasing if that’s the protocol- I’m a bit of a nervous nelly and don’t want to be stepping in any toes.

My advice for contacting hospitals is to try to have your hospital number and NHS number to hand if possible
