Hi, long story but here goes. Have never had regular 'normal' periods. Have been back and forward to gp as recently as last week. Anyway this month I have had a horrendous period. Terrible pain for the first 6 days with very little bleeding, dr gave me an internal on about day 6 and period started with a vengance. Not a lot of pain now but am still bleeding 15 days on. Am getting fed up and am very hormonal today. What is going on?? Can anyone help???

Am going tomorrow for blood tests for thtroid, iron levels etc and also a glucose tollerance test. Have been back and forward since I was 11 and to be honest I have had enough. One gynie specialist told me I had pcos. My GP disagrees. Wants me to go back and have untrasounds repeated and a new appt made. Why must us women suffer????lol

I have never had regular periods sometimes once a year! I went through a really stressful time, long story but my dh sister got cancer and passed away and his mum got breast cancer, she got through it after chemo. Anyway I had my periods for 3 motnhs .

I lost alot of weight and the pain was terrible and constantly felt weak. Had numerous tests and they found I had many thousands of tiny little cysts (harmless they said) on my overaries but it wasn't actually PCOS?? Normally pcos sufferers are overweight, have bad acne etc and I was the opposite. No one could give an answer and couldn't help unless I wanted to go on the pill, but that turns me into phycho bitch from hell so refused! I ended up going to a homeopath and they gave me all of these vile potions to drink and kept to a strict diet. They stopped!

A couple of months later we wanted to start trying for a baby, but because of irregular periods and these cysts they said it might be difficult. I got pregnant in 2 weeks again !

Not sure if your stressed at the moment or homeopathy might help you (but I felt it did for me), but they will stop eventually. Just thought you might like to know that I went through the same thing. Hope yopu get better soon. By the way since having kids I have regular periods now xx

I sympathise, I've never had "normal" periods either. In my case the diagnoses were endometriosis and PCOS. It took me years to get properly diagnosed. Many GPs in my view would not recognise PCOS or endometriosis if a classic case of either was presented; there is much ignorance.

I would return to the GP and insist that you are referred to a gynae as a matter of urgency.

DO not be fobbed off with excuses or poor GP care which is frankly what you have had to date.

If PCOS is present this will show up in the blood test if they know what to look for!!. Two hormone levels need to be tested for - these are LH (luteinising hormone) and FSH (follicle stimulation hormone). Normally these two levels are the same but if LH is higher than FSH this is one indicator of PCOS. An internal ultrasound scan can see what the ovaries and uterine cavity look like - with polycystic ovaries the ovaries are larger than normal (walnut) size and have multiple cystic follicles. Some of these are dormant, others release hormones and some may contain eggs.

The cause of the period pain particularly if it is a long standing problem needs to be addressed properly. Endometriosis is a common culprit in this regard but the only way it is picked up is often through a keyhole surgery op called a laparoscopy. Nothing like blood tests or ultrasounds will detect it.

Bleeding like this should be investigated by a gynae who knows his stuff - do not be afraid to ask questions of such people.

Do not be fobbed off - you will need to be persistant in order to get answers.

"Normally pcos sufferers are overweight, have bad acne etc and I was the opposite".

I would like to pick up on the above point.

PCOS is a very individualistic disorder and affects each woman with it very differently. What is a problem for one is not for another. My main problem associated with it was irregular periods and I was diagnosed with it on that basis (the bloodwork showed the classic LH/FSH imbalance).

They could not diagnose the problem - unbelieveable!!. The multiple cystic follicles associated with this condition (PCOS) can and do disappear only to be replaced by further cystic follicles. Being the correct weight for your height can help symptoms markedly - I think this is what happened with your good self.

actually I went from being skinny to being really skinny! Have never been overweight in my life. I saw loads of specialists in London but they all came to the conclusion that the cysts where harmless and put it down to stess why I was constantly bleeding. You sound more informed on the matter than me! I just don't think I had pcos if I got pregnant so quickly??

I'm off to bed, I'm in s'pore and it getting late [yawn]. Hope you feel better soon singyswife

Are you sure you couldn't have been pg? You get extended bleeding after a m/c and it sounds like my first one. Light bleeding for a few days, very bad cramps, then heavy bleeding for a couple of weeks...

Hiya, the pill turns me into the phsyco bitch from hell too. Thought it was just me. The suggested the coil for me but many posters on here have said not to do it. I have 2 children and I actually think since having my second that I have got worse. I am starting to feel really worn out by them now. Went to the gym this mornign thinking this might give me more energy as it sometimes does but now I am knackered. Hoping they will stop soon as I am going on my holidays next weekend (7th July) and would like to not have them,. Thanks for replying

I did a couple of pg tests before my period actually arrived. I have a tablet at home called Provera which I take to bring on periods if they dont start by themselves and the pmt symptoms are horrendous. I havent needed them in the last few months but I always do a pg test before I consider taking them.
