Twig, my dh is a fussy sod, wont eat fruit or veg, and pretty much the bog standard boring stuff with lots of gluten is all he will eat....! have tried to get him to try this, but he would starve....
The other thing we were looking at was the high dosage glucosamine (sp?) but the dosage would be so high it would cost a fortune and they wont prescribe it......

My DS may have this - what is it exactly?

mankyscotslass · 26/06/2007 08:07

arthtitis linked to the skin condition psoriasis. DH has had psoriasis since tiny, but only shown symtoms of the arthritis in the last few years.....

sorry, meant to post this link for you but had to go on school run..."look at this page"

thank you for the link - it does sound very much like what DS has, but we are waiting for a definitive diagnosis, so will wait and see.

cece · 26/06/2007 13:50

My bil was recently diagnosed with this. So will watch with interest.

mankyscotslass · 26/06/2007 13:55

My Dh has his latest appointment with his consultant on Wednesday, he wants to chang e his meds but thinks his doctor will not wnat to. They are making him ill and miserable....will let you know what is said. He will also probably have another injection into his thum joints, these do help a bit although are v painful at the time!

Hi manky, found you

I appreciate that your DH is a fussy sod but wouldn't he try it for a few weeks ... you can get gluten free versions of loads of things its just an adjustment

I really do think that 'won't eat fruit or veg' is a bit daft for a grown man, don't you? .. his body needs as much variety as possible. But then I also appreciate how irritating it can be being on the outside thinking 'this might fix it just try it ' and knowing you are talking to a brick wall

Glucosamine didn't help DH at all, acupunture did for a while as did chinese herbalism but again they stopped

hope your consultant listens to him

mankyscotslass · 26/06/2007 15:53

Twig, glad you found me!
I totally agree, we have had loads of arguements about his diet, especially as I dont want the kids being fussy. Think I am going to have to try a different approach with him. He accuses me of nagging Drives me mad! He might be up for the acupuncture actually. We have also tried Reiki, that made him more relaxed but did not help the symptoms much!
Thanks for the tips

Well they did take him off the methotrexate, put him on Hydroxloroquine (sp)? They would have expected his body to adjust to the higher dose by now if it was going to. Will see how he goes. My mum is also on this for her Lupus! He has to go back in 6 mths.
He is not bad enough for Enbrel apparently

Well that's one good thing

I have found with the NHS that those who shout loudest are heard the most I'm afraid

And if you're consistent they think more about you (with phone calls and forced appointments)

I would also imagine that DH, like mine, just retreats and doesn't want to argue force things which is partly character and partly pain and partly depression

good luck with new regime manky ..

mankyscotslass · 28/06/2007 09:50

Twig, sadly I think you are right about the NHS...
My Dh does sound like yours, I have to say. Seems to resign himself to things and accept them, while I am more likely to open my gob and shout!
Broached gluten free diet last night...said he was too tired to discuss, but I know that he will probably think about it over the next few days then mention it again himself. Sometimes it's better to plant the seed, I learned the hard way!
BTW, do you know if it's true that Psoriasis tends to run in the maternal line? i am sure i have been told/heard this somewhere, but can't find it. DH has it from his mother, but there is none in my side and i am hoping the kids with be clear.

I don't know about the genetics I'm afraid .. I know that DH was diagnosed with ankylosing spondilitis and PsA and that the AS bit has a 5% chance of getting to our children .. I sincerely hope you're right about the maternal line thing on the PsA (because we're almost certain that the Ankylosing Spondilitis wasn't the right one as more trouble from PsA) ... maybe we could ask Tamum (she's our resident geneticist) .. I'll email her

Do you bake at all? I could give you some tips on making gluten free cakes if you want .. or just buy the gluten free shortbread with extra jammy bits from the Sainsbury's free from aisle .. maybe if he realises he's amending diet and not giving up things he'll give it a go .. there's only anecdotal evidence that it helps some people though not scientific proof

mankyscotslass · 28/06/2007 16:35

Hi Twig, thanks for that....I'm not much of a baker really, but do have a go. I think I will have a look at the Free From stuff in Sainsbury's thanks for the tip. I may well come back to you about the recipes depending on whcih way he jumps!
Like you I am really hoping it goes through the maternal line, my lot have enough to deal with from me without having that from their dad! I have a close family history of Hyperthyroidism and Lupus on my side. Families!!!
He is a lot happier now he doesnt need to take the methotrexate again, and on the new tablets he doesnt need his bloods doing every fortnight either, which is good. Although due to the sulfasalazine he has it done every three months anyway! Should get the new prescription tomrrow!

Twiglett · 28/06/2007 16:54

Manky I'm afraid the quick answer from Tamum is that its not true about it only passing down maternal line

sorry

mankyscotslass · 28/06/2007 17:11

argh...ok thanks for the info! looks like my lot have double the trouble to deal with then....

OP posts:
Twiglett · 28/06/2007 17:15

its still a number's game though .. don't get obsessed .. for that way madness lies

mankyscotslass · 28/06/2007 18:09

According to dh, that warning came too late

OP posts:
mankyscotslass · 31/07/2007 08:51

Twig, just an update...so far its a no go with the food for DH....will keep chipping away at him! (I have a cunning plan to sneak the stuff into his diet)
Don't think the new meds are working yet, he is really achey and stiff in his hands, feet and knees especially, so although he is happy to be off the methotrexate and rid of the constant sickness, he is still a bit down. Gets to him that although he is only in his mid 30's, he often feels a good bit older than that thanks to the PsA.
How are things with you?
