I was diagnosed with an under active thyroid about 31/2 months ago my doctor started me on 50mc of Levothyroxine and was still having regular periods but then my doctor upped the dosage and now my period is late( I am not pregnant, done a test) my partner and I are trying to conceive but i’m Not sure how that will happen if my periods are irregular, p.s I also have P.O.S

Hi I will reply later in more detail not much time now.

Please write down your last blood test results.

Also, are you taking any supplements?

Neurotrash · 13/12/2018 16:10

Also what age?

What is POS?

Elouise2000 · 13/12/2018 16:43

My last test said I was borderline( not sure exactly what that means) i’m 36 years old and POS is policistic ovary syndrome

Ah yes thanks. I'm not knowledgeable about the pos as I think that's a different issue but I wouldn't try ttc until you know your thyroid levels are stable ie you've stopped changing your dose for a good 3-6 months.

Low thyroid hormones can cause miscarriages so you need to make sure your tsh is around 1 or below, definitely below 2.5 before you ttc.

As soon as you conceive (around 6 weeks) take a test and ideally start taking an extra 25 mg then test again 4 weeks later. but I'd speak to Gp about all this before hand and get a plan of action in place with them.

Please read this and take to gp if possible

Your periods could be being affected by your thyroid issue.

Thyroids take a while to fully settle down, the medication takes a good 2-3 months to build up to proper levels.

Close monitoring in early pregnancy in important for mum and baby - don't worry too much though as the fact you're on some thyroxine is great. I'm on 125; during pregnancy I went up by 25 then another 25, then dropped a little in the third trimester by 12.5.

Ideally You also need to have been taking folic acid and vitamin d for 3 months prior to conception; iodine is also important for early pregnancy if you don't eat dairy or white fish, so a pregnancy multivitamin can be a good idea.

No problem Smile not all gps are up up speed with this. Midwives don't cover it either.

You often get seen by a consultant around 12-14 weeks but the main time frame to check thyroid levels is in the first trimester so it's a bit of a loop hole.

Get all your ducks in a row so to speak: tsh around or below 1 for a good few months, take multivits and let your cycle settle. Then ttc - your pcos May have settled as a result, I'm not sure. But get the thyroid side if things bang on first.
