an MMR vs single jab question ...

binkie · 31/08/2004 22:58

I've had ds (5) and dd (nearly 4) both single-jabbed, mostly because of development concerns about ds. No concerns whatsoever about dd, just thought it was fair to treat both the same.

Dd has now had her follow-up immunity test and the mumps jab hasn't taken. So: does anyone know what research I should be doing to decide whether I should (a) put her back on the interminable single-mumps-jab waiting lists; or (b) give her the ordinary pre-school MMR booster (so for all 3, though she only needs mumps).

Eg: is it likely that if there are no behavioural concerns (at all - quite the opposite) by 4ish, the MMR is unlikely to be a risk?

binkie - cant answe your question as ds is 2 and only just had his mumps. Just wondered at what age should I have his immunity test? where did you have this done? thanks

Some children have regressed after the pre-schoolers- but smaller numbers. (and the numbers are small anyway- actually children regressing after pre-schoolers is one probelm with the "you mothers are so dim you just didn't notice your children were autistic" argument).

The single jab and the MMR jab are both equally likely to work/fail as they are the same jab.

Are you particularly worried about mumps?

Thank you both. Joanne, I'll find out the details for you and post. It was one of those generalised Harley St. testing clinics - we were sent there by the private paed we used for the jabs - Dr. Primavesi in central London, website here - not sure if it does tests without linked referrals but being a commercial enterprise I'd bet it would, at a cost natch.

Jimjams, as you'd imagine I'm personally not worried about mumps for her but as I don't have concerns about her immune system or behaviour I feel a kind of obligation to the herd immunity principle. So I think I ought to get her done, just concerned that MMR on top of single jabs might be an untested (or actually doubtful) kind of route.

hmmm- although even the UK dept of health didn't think mumps was enough of a concern to bother introducing it as a standard vaccination until the intro of the MMR. If you talk to dept of health officials its not one they worry about (measles they do- but not mumps)

Haven't been able to find anyone who offers single jabs! DH and I are now thinking maybe we will just wait until ds is two and get the MMR - which I really didn't want.

Any advice?

Definitely clinics in London that do singles... Keep bumping to the top or ferret thru archives to find listings.

I wish we could get there. I was remiss in not saying we are in the U.S. It would be nice to talk dh into a trip to the UK but he has a phobia about airplanes .
