How long after the flu jab would it be alright to go swimming? Pregnancy and toddler.

Hello!

This sounds like a stupid question but I'm over thinking everything at the moment.

I'm 21 weeks pregnant and DD is 2.
We are both set to have flu jabs (nasal spray for DD) tomorrow.

How long after these jabs would it be alright to go swimming or more public places like soft play where there usually are a few more germs around?

I felt a bit grotty the last time I had one, does it mean we we have a higher chance of catching anything for a little while after we've been treated?
Is it best to stay away from swimming/ soft play for a few days after?

Many thanks Smile

It's fine to do whatever you feel you want to do.

The old ban in swimming after jabs came from the days when the polio jab was the oral (sugar lump) version, which was a live vaccine and which shed considerably. So those who had received it were advised to keep out if pools for couple of weeks to protect others, and those who had not had it were advised to keep out until they had. That version of the jab was discontinued by NHS in 2004, but a folk memory of the advice lives on.

The flu jab is not live. The spray is, and it can shed, but it's so weak that it doesn't pose an infection risk.to the general population. So NHS will provide jab rather than spray to actual close intimate/household cohabitants of the very vulnerable (eg those on chemo where you can never be as sure as you'd want to be that the jab 'took' normally and who are highly vulnerable to infection) but does not reommend limiting normal activities and contacts of the freshly sprayed.
