What supplements do people take if they have any (or all) of IBS, CFS, FM, HM and menopause?

End of a troubled year and I am review my supplements

I take (diagnosed by GP & prescribed):
Zinc (mouth ulcers)
Iron (run down tired plus pernicious aneamia)
B12 (PA)
Methyl Folate (to help process the B12)
D (run down tired)

I also take Calcium (have been dairy free and on a resctricted diet for up to 20 yrs), Magnesium, Potassium & K2 - but I can't for the life of me remember why (menopause causing memory loss? just being a it thick? who knows)

I think I want to add a really good probiotic as my IBS seems to have been helped/reduced and although I am increasing and widening my diet I guess it might need a bit of a hand - any suggestions?

Anything else useful I could add or anything I should consider reducing or cutting out? I will do research but I need a starting place

Don't have a clue about supplements for menopause - main sympoms: hot flushes and insomnia

TIA

bringbackthestripes I take quite a strong CBD oil, the Holland & Barrett stuff is really weak so won't do much for chronic conditions. I've heard that it can work for people who want to sleep better or have mild anxiety.

I joined a CBD group on Facebook called CBD users and read through stuff for 6 months before deciding it was worth a try. I followed their recommendations and I generally use this stuff

www.lovecbd.org/product/800mg-cbd-entourage-oil-spray/

I've ordered lots of times and had no problems and I've also used SimplyCBD. I've tried some of the lower strength oils but I need at least the 800mg.

bringbackthestripes · 15/12/2018 10:19

Wow that is expensive! Shock
Thanks for the link.

TheStarOnTheChristmasTree · 15/12/2018 10:52

bringbackthe stripes Yes it's not cheap stuff, though much cheaper than Holland & Barrett for the percentage of CBD oil that you get in it.

I can't afford it but I can't manage without it Sad A bottle lasts me about a month. It's also absolutely vile! Believe me if it didn't work I definitely wouldn't be paying that kind of money or putting myself through taking it.

KatyMac · 15/12/2018 10:58

I think part of the problem with this is you are investing money, time & hope on something that might not work - I was always sceptical of 'snake oils' especially expensive ones

Then my GP diagnosed B12 & D deficiency (followed by Zinc, Iron, folate) so I 'had' to start taking them - and a small amount of research threw up the 'must take these with those' from proper 'medical' sites potassium, K, Magnesium were added and calcium followed as menopause hit!

Now previously when told by people "I must try xyz because it will change my life" only to find out it costs an arm & a leg I swore I wouldn't tell people about any of my supplements that worked......but B12 & D cost pennies!! So I tell everyone

Trying something new is scary, I only ever try one at a time and I give it a reasonable time to 'work'

Choosing one to try....I'll do some research

Loads of good info here thanks

Yes I do this too and then when I run out I stop taking it so I can check if it was really working. If I get worse then I know it worked. Sometimes I'll do it again just to double check. I've tried a lot of things!

KatyMac · 15/12/2018 11:35

& you are up against the GP saying B12 & Vit D cannot possibly make any significant difference so don't bother.....when in fact they have changed your life

If it's placebo fine - I like the way it makes me feel Grin

I generally stop and start again to see if something works, like you

Methyl Folate was a big winner over folate - I went back to folate and saw a big difference

I agree. My L Carnitine and D ribose are about to run out so I’m going to see how I am without before I splash out another £38 to order again.

I will have to see about CBD, the simplyCBD is a lot cheaper so may try theirs first.

Methyl Folate now being added to my shopping list Grin

Regarding ubiquinol I found this:

www.healthrising.org/blog/2016/08/08/mendus-fibromyalgia-chronic-fatigue-syndrome-mitoq-coq10-trial/

Which seems to indicate it may help with fibro not cfs.

I've never been diagnosed with cfs but I do have hypermobility and hypothyroidism. When thyroid isn't controlled my hypermobility realiy struggles as I loose strength and muscle very quickly. This happened after my first child and I never fully recovered from the pain nor the fatigue as I never fully recovered strength. I did wonder if ubiquinol helped when I was taking it before this baby, mainly the muscle pain though. Pregnancy realiy helped (despite breeding another non sleeper) as I'm a lot, lot stronger and maintaining it.

An interesting read - thanks

I have both!

Bringbackthestripes · 16/12/2018 11:41

I have both so don’t know what to do now after reading

”The ME/CFS group did not fare so well; a parallel analysis actually found reduced sleep quality in ME/CFS group compared to the placebo group (19%).”

My sleep quality is bad enough as it is!

Has anyone found a probiotic which you don't have to take forever and actually fixes the imbalance permanently? Does this vsl3 do that?

Neurotrash · 16/12/2018 19:06

Found this:

sciencebasedmedicine.org/coenzyme-q10-for-heart-failure-the-hype-and-the-science/

As I say I took it for miscarriages and conception over 40 and found the research on that convincing. I believe it's yet to be properly proven for other things.

Yes, as a few others mentioned, there is quite a bit of reseach on CoQ10.
Here is a little more research on fertility: www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/26111777
And, here is the research on mitochondrial disease: journals.sagepub.com/doi/pdf/10.1177/2326409817707771

When you are looking for water and fat-soluble, it should say right on the bottle. For example, Qunol is one brand.

Has anyone tried a probiotic?
