I posted this earlier on another thread, however since then DD seems to be agony, can a bug/wind really cause so much pain?

DD woke in the early hours of Sat morning with tummy ache and didn't really go back to sleep as her tummy was hurting too much. She was sick on Sat am but seemed to improve (except very tired) during the day - until last night when going to bed said her tummy really hurt, this has gone on all day today and she had been sick again (but not lots like a sickness bug). She has had normal poos. The pain seems to come in waves and she seems very distressed when she gets it. DH has just taken her to the emergency doctor (as it got so bad that we thought it was an appendicitus). The doc said it is wind, and prescribed calpol, hot drinks and a hot water bottle. No diifference so far.

My question - can wind really cause so much pain, complete loss of appetite, vomitting and lethergy?

Any other suggestions

wouldn't she have a temperature with infection?

lucykate · 24/06/2007 21:49

i would query appendicitis with your gp tomorrow if she's showing no signs of improving

Tiggiwinkle · 24/06/2007 22:02

If she is still in acute pain I would get a second opinion. We were sent home from A and
E with DS3 when he was in pain-they said it was a UTI. I had to take him back in the middle of the night with what turned out to be appendicitis; by the time they operated it had burst and he had peritonitis. How did the doctor rule out appendicitis?

stoppinattwo · 24/06/2007 22:17

appendicitis is the first thing that sprung to mind when i read the op.

the pain isnt excruciating as with an adult but it is enough for them to complain. Its the vomiting that givves it away.

Does she have a temperature............

The vomiting is quite constant and intense, and she would go down hill quite rapidly if it was appendicitis. DS had this when he was 3, caught it just before it burst. They gave him morphine in hospital for the pain and he perked up that much they nearly sent him home

Has her pain moved at all? If it was her appendics sometimes the pain starts in the center and then moves ro the right side

belgo · 25/06/2007 07:43

cardy - how is she today?

cardy · 25/06/2007 10:30

She slept OK surprisingly. The pain doesn't seem to have moved but is still there. She is just lying on the sofa and won't even touch dry toast. She hasn't been sick since yesterday afternoon. No temperature, would she with appendicitis?

I am not sure how they rule out appendicitis. Dh is taking her to our own GP this morning.

Thanks for all the advice, it is worrying isn't?

Hi there
I had a stomach bug 2 weeks back. The pain was so bad, I thought I would pass out. It also came in waves. I was also sick about 3 times. Went to emergency doc. He said it was IBS.
A few days later my husband had the same....

So I diagnosed myself - tummy bug! and in a bad way.

Hope she feels better soon!

cardy · 25/06/2007 10:43

That's reassuring. Not very pleasant, I know but I guess it will pass. I guess I always assocaiate stomach bug with lots of vommiting and diarohea.

I had appendicitis as a child - the pain was very, very bad and constant and i was sick a lot. The first doctor who saw me said it was just a tummy bug as I didn't have a temp - but my Mum took me for a second opinion the next day and they did a blood test which showed tons of white blood cells - i don't remember why that proved I had appendicitis but apparently it did, so I had the op a couple of hours later. What your DD has does sound more like wind but if it goes on much longer I would see the doc again. Appendicitis can be quite hard to spot as it's not that different from other things. My Mum always said the way she knew it just wasn't wind was because I was so incredibly pale. I hope your DD gets better very soon x

Tiggiwinkle · 25/06/2007 10:55

Cardy-my DS did have a very high temperature with his appendicitis, but I dont think it is always the case that you have a temp with it.
I think the only way they can confirm it is appendicitis is to operate, if they are pretty sure of the symptoms.
Hope the news is good from the GP.

DD and DH are just back from the doctor and it seems that DD has got some kind of bug (there seems to have been others at her school with something similar). The pain is likely to be caused by glands in her stomach as the glands in her neck are also swollen.

It is reassuring to see your own GP especially when they know what is going round locally and at the local school.
