DS being admitted to Great Ormond Street in 2 weeks

Hi there,

I havent been on here for aaaggggeeessss!!!!

My toddler was diagnosed with Diabetes Insipidus (hormone problem) by our local hospital, they then tried to withdraw there diagnosis so i asked for a 2nd opinion.

Luckily, after much battling with my local g.ps funding i got a referral to Great Ormond Street. Had an oupatients appointment and they want to admit my son for 5days to redo all the tests plus more.

Im dreading it as i know what the dehydration test involves and its awful for ds and me watching him. Also got to have another mri scan of brain and pituarity gland,3weeks of testerone injections as London discovered both his testicles are undescended (local hospital missed that one), more blood tests to see if his small size is due to another hormone deficiency and i could go on but i cant remember all the other stuff.

I am obviously worried but also im thinking god damn, how can i not wash my hair for a whole week!

Anyone any tips how you get through it?Ive only done 1night with him before and that was local so had visitors. My mums coming up for the mri scan because of the anaesthetic, other than that im on my own with him

Hi brandy -
My ds has appointments there on the 4th and 6th - I was going to say perhaps we could drop anything in you need - but doesn't quite work.
Sorry.
Hope it goes well - I know from experience that the worrying beforehand is actually the worst bit.

brandy7 · 25/06/2007 13:40

hi fairy

oh thats a shame the dates dont match, nice thought from you though

hope your ds is ok, is it hormone problems as well?

Make sure you drink loads of water....hospitals are wildly overheated and it makes you feel knackered... and take lovely products with you to make yourself feel less....hospitally....aromatherapy oils etc....to smell and perk you up. Pillow very good idea, and fruit stash, and improving books/things you need to get done. Good luck.

No brandy - he was born with a cleft lip and palate, so it's on going orthodontistry!

His only hormone problems are connected to the fact he's 15!

Hope you and your ds cope OK.

if its any help you can use my house to shower - not close to Great Ormond st but on the district line tube. Surely you can get away when he's asleep?

brandy7 · 25/06/2007 17:36

thanks for offer kewcucumber, too be honest i wouldnt want to leave him, he doesnt sleep brilliantly and wakes loads which im hoping once hes sorted out wont happen anymore

will def take body sprays and stuff to freshen up, i hate not being able to shower/bath daily, im sure my hormones are up the creak at the grand ole age of 38 as i get so bloody hot all the time

You WILL be able to shower, honestly you will.
Well, I'll be very surprised if you can't! Children's wards are very used to having parents in residence.
But you won't have much space for storing stuff.

brandy7 · 25/06/2007 17:41

thanks blu, im sure youre right. i just think feeling dirty makes me feel a bit down and i wana feel clean and upbeat if poss

I hope everything goes well Brandy

Blu · 25/06/2007 17:45

Actually - take flip flops to use as slippers around the ward, and in the shower.
I know what you mean - of course you will want to be shiny and upbeat.

Kewcumber · 25/06/2007 19:53
