How many miles do you run a week?

Read an article saying 30 miles a week has incredible health benefits - does anyone run this much and if so, how do you break it down/fit it in?

Ta, Dinny

I ran the parent's race at school and the occasional sprint for a train! does that count? (As for health benefits, my hips hurt for two days after sports day!).

i am doing race for life ina few weeka so at the moment i run 5k (3 ish miles) 3 times a week. I think if i tried to run 30 miles i would require medical assistance! I have enough trouble fitting in 3miles every other day and that only takes half an hour!!!

dinny · 23/06/2007 20:21

yes, God knows how you'd fit it in (not have young kids presumably)!

I ride bike 40 miles on a good week (two evenings). Running 30 miles a week suggests to me an hour most nights: can't see how busy parents can fit that it!

Oncebitten · 23/06/2007 21:29

Yeah I normally run about that (injured at mo' post FLM marathon) I do approx 3 runs at 7miles ish and one long one at the weekends 10-12 miles. Partner watches DD in the evening or i will get up before he goes to work. Also my DD goes to her grandparents on a sat night, so i get the long one in on Sat Eve. You do have to be very dedicated to it, cos its soooo easy to not bother. I think that ANY amount of running is good for you though and will just do 3 miles if time is short.

dinny · 23/06/2007 21:37

Oncebiteen - how long do they take you? can run 10k on treadmill in an hour but goodness knows how long it'd take outdoors...

and what time do you get up in morning to run???

Only about 6 or 7 miles a week,

feels so good to be able to say that! I started running at the beginning of May and loving it. I have progressed from running a minute at a time, to being able to run a continous 2 mile stretch. I have followed the Bupa 5k fun run training programme and all it takes is 30 mins three times a week

I can't fit it in and my knees wouldn't stand it. I do about 18.

speedymama · 23/06/2007 21:55

At the moment I run between 9-11 miles a week. At the weekend I do my longer runs (currently 5miles) and during the week I will run 2 or 3 miles depending on time. i try to run outside at least twice a week and at least once a week in the gym. If I don't go to the gym, I try to run outside. Ideally, I would like 6 miles to be my standard long run at the weekend and my mid week runs to be 3 miles (30 minutes).

dinny · 23/06/2007 21:57

well done, Wallace, btw

hmmmm, just wouldn't be able to fit in super-long run at weekend. how long would 10-12 miles take, you think?

speedymama · 23/06/2007 21:57

I would also say that just running 3 miles twice a week has huge health and physical benefits - great way of getting a flat tummy.

Running 30 miles a week is unrealistic for most people.

speedymama · 23/06/2007 21:59

Dinny, 12 miles would take most average runners about 2 hours.

dinny · 23/06/2007 22:03

wonder if I could fit in a long run en route to work at the weekend....

any ideas? I live 28 miles from work and not near a station so would have to take my car some of the way... hmmmmm

Thought I would add that I have 3yo DTS so at weekends, I go running between 6.30-7.00am. If I run during the week outside, I either run after the twins have gone to nursery if I'm not at work or before DH goes to work so 6.30am.

dinny · 24/06/2007 13:17

thanks, Speedy - going to try and do 3 miles at about 6am tomorrow - if I can haul myself out of bed, that is!

Hi Dinny

Did you manage to do your early morning run?

I won't be able to run until Thursday because DH is working away (in sunny LA)so it is just me and the twins. As I am not working on Thursday, I'll be able to go for a run after I put them in nursery.
