If your child has been on anti-b's for a UTI, how long did it take for fever to break?

Doc said 3 year old with UTI's high temp would probably break by this morning but it's still rising (4 doses anti-bs) in between nurofen and calpol

and nights are a pain

how long?

possibly the wrong antibiotic - did they test to see which specific bacteria is causing it?

ds had one and didn't respond to first lot of amoxycillin, when he was prescribed correct one (trimetheron(?)) he was a lot better within 24 hours...even 12 hours of first dose maybe....

LucyJones · 23/06/2007 19:41

I would go back Monday morning if no better

dinny · 23/06/2007 19:42

I'd try and see emergency doctor tonight/tomorrow, personally, as UTIs can cause damage if let untreated too long.

Curmudgeonlett · 23/06/2007 19:43

yes she's on the trimetheron one too which consultant told me was the right one to start with whilst they send the urine away for culturing and confirmation of which UTI

its just so wearing having her feverish, because whilst she's fine about half hour after nurofen, she's one of those children who gets altered with a high temp which is rather scary to watch

poor thing.

my dd had one when she was about 3 and the Trimether..blah didn't clear it, whereas the amoxy DID....

sounds like it is all in hand, but maybe you could see someone tomorrow and say it isn't working so could she start on another type maybe?

hope she has an OK night, I know how awful UTIs are.

DelGirl · 23/06/2007 19:53

my dd 2 is on long term trimethoprim for kidney reflux. When she has a uit, which has only knowingly been twice, she can have fervers that last a few days tbh. You think she's getting better, then her temp spikes. If you saw her when she's fully dosed on nurofen and calpol, you wouldn't think there was anything wrong. Alternate the nurofen 7 calpol, even through the night. It's horrible isn't it . I have a nightmare few days with dd recently and a uti. The out of hours gp gave her amoxyccilin, which apparently is no good for a uti, just in case they try and give it. She came off her trimethoprim and they gave her another anti b. Can't think of the name but it begins with C. Heop she's better soon.

sorry about the typos .

Cephalexin is good for UTIs and some bacteria are resistant to trimethoprim but sensitive to cephalexin. If dd is no better tomorrow then I would go back to the hospital.

thanks

yes dinny when fully-dosed you wouldn't know anything's wrong .. she has said her tummy's not hurting so I think this one is working ..

its just so knackering
