Terrible post operative vomiting

Hello

I had a laparoscopy yesterday at 2pm, I was very nauseous and vomited 2 hours after eating toast. I was given stemetil, sick again after an hour and sent home with sick bowls. I vomited after eating 10 crisps, and vomited after drinking small sips of water twice. I'm exhausted.

My mum called 111 as I can't speak as I vomited a bit of blood because of a difficult intubation. They said they were going to get a gp to come out to me and bring some anti emetics and check me as I'm so weak.

Is this normal after a general anesthetic? I've had them before and not reacted like this but was given morphine and fentanyl this time too.

I've had many GAs and been on morphine (it makes me itch) and fentanyl, neither made me sick. You could call the ward. There'll be a number in your discharge letter.

INeedNewShoes · 05/12/2018 01:36

I think you should call the ward for advice. If you don't have their details call 111.

I haven't known anyone vomit like this after a GA.

NewYoiker · 05/12/2018 01:39

I'm very surprised you were sent home vomiting
Ring the ward or 111

KingIrving · 05/12/2018 05:44

Not normal at all. It might not be due to the GA but the operation. Call the ward or 111 again and this time just say that since discharged you are vomiting non stop and unable to even keep water

jessstan2 · 05/12/2018 05:56

Bless you, I've also had vomiting problems after a GA. It's not at all uncommon. You'll be OK soon though, I promise.

GA makes me vomit too, it is quite common. First happened after a laparoscopy as well and they wouldn't let me home untii I had taken anti emetics and it had stopped. Hope GP is with you shortly - feel better soon xx

panago · 05/12/2018 06:37

Why did they send you home?!

christmaschristmaschristmas · 05/12/2018 13:53

Ring the ward. They will be able to advise you best because they know the full details of your operation/sedation etc.

I vomit terribly after GA and need strong anti-emetics.

GoodHeavensNoImAChicken · 05/12/2018 13:56

Yeah GA frequently makes people vomit but you should’ve been given anti emetics before discharge. Try and phone the unit they should be able to sort some

KingIrving · 05/12/2018 18:39

I hope the OP is feeling better.
Yes of course GA can make people vomit but to the extent they can't keep, water, a crisp, or left unable tot talk?
In case of a knee operation, yes, bad luck, but with an abdominal operation, such reactions need to be assessed to determine if they are linked to the GA or something not gone to plan with the surgery.

cheesywotnots · 05/12/2018 19:39

Please call 111 for advice, did the hospital give you a discharge letter and any medication. There are different types of anti sickness medicines, so soon after an op I would seek medical advice. Hope you feel better soon.

cheesywotnots · 05/12/2018 19:42

The ward you were in will not be able to arrange any medication for you, they may well just say come back into a&E or call an ambulance. You don't want to feel like this and if you can't even drink you could become dehydrated, you were nil by mouth for a while so could be getting quite dry.

MrMakersFartyParty · 05/12/2018 20:14

Thank you all, sorry I was a bit delirious when I wrote this. 111 really let me down and no doctor called us till 4am. At which point I hadn't drank for 5 hours and they said to leave me asleep and see if I could drink in the morning? As it happens, I drank 5ml every hour for 3 hours and kept that down. Then I upped it throughout the day and have now had about 500ml throughout the day and have eaten toast and soup.
I think I might complain because I feel I wasn't fit at all for home, I was given morphine and then 3 syringes of fentanyl as an iv injection and I think that started it all off.

Thanks all, I'm so glad it seems to be done for now...

Glad you're feeling better, with those painkillers and with the g.a. I am not surprised you were sick.

Branleuse · 05/12/2018 23:14

It might be the morphine. Im really sensitive to anything like that. Morphine codeine, pethidine, any opiate, they all make me so sick. Its quite common.

megletthesecond · 05/12/2018 23:31

Intravenous morphine makes me sick too.
I have to have it in tablet form lightweight that I am.

Hope you feel much better tomorrow.

Riotingbananas · 05/12/2018 23:35

Morphine and any of the synthetic opioids make heave for hours and hours. Think I read somewhere that post op nausea and vomiting is more common if you have migraines too. Glad you're feeling better.

ShovingLeopard · 05/12/2018 23:37

I had this after a GA. Had three different anti-emetics via drip, and injection, and none worked, even when the three were given simultaneously.

I vomited for three days and had to be hydrated via drip. The constant retching after abdominal surgery was the worst experience of my life. The difference is they kept me in until I had recovered. Whyever did they send you home when they did?! You should follow this up. Glad to hear you are feeling better now.
