Hi
Just wondering if anyone has had their tonsils removed recently, and how bad it was. Ive had years of sore throat problems and get tonsilitis around 4 times a year. I get sore throats very regular but Ive been told in the past its due to acid reflux
Ive seen a consultant today whos sending for me to have a barrium swallow. He also said I could have my tonsils removed but cant guarentee I wont have any throat problems after.. does anyone experience painful throats once their tonsils have been removed.

I had mine removed about 12-years ago and it was very easy recovery compared to the tonsillitis I had they put me in the hospital for four days! I had Strep,MRSA and a fungal infection causing that tonsillitis and was sickest I'd ever been from an infection so the surgery was easy in comparison.

I had my tonsils removed when I was 13 can remember it so clearly I suffered so bad with regular tonsillitis and agonising sore throat I am not exaggerating when I say I don't think I've had a sore throat since and that is 13 years ago X

Thank you ladies. I think all the threads Ive read knowone has ever regretted having them removed. Once Ive had my barrium swallow I will decide then.

I worked as a theatre nurse for a while. I would say it’s a pretty tough operation, most people are surprised at how sore it is when they wake up, the consultant says it gets worse before it gets better. Therefore it’s not something they suggest lightly. But if you’re getting it 4 times a year and really suffering, a week or so of pain may well seem worth it.

I had my tonsils out 5 years ago and it was the beet decision I ever made.

The recovery was pretty tough, with day 4 and 5 post op being the worst, but after that everything seemed to get better and I've hardly had any throat problems since

I had mine out when I was 28 after repeated bouts of illness and many many courses of antibiotics (which I'm convinced was partly the cause of my IBS)
Yes, it's a bit painful but much better in the long run (plus it also reduced my snoring)

Mine grew back though so I had to have them out again 16 years later. I don't think that normally happens so you're probably safe Smile. I still think it was better to have them removed (twice!) than put up with the infections

I had mine removed nearly 3 years ago. I had a complicated recovery with infection and haemorrhage, and I ended up in hospital for a few days. Even with that (and I'm a worst case scenario hopefully), I've never regretted it. I'm so much healthier without them!

I've been having tonsillitis several times a year throughout my childhood and adult life. My tonsils were always huge. I finally had my tonsils out a few years ago, I was 31. THE BEST THING I'VE DONE! The recovery wasn't bad at all. You can read horror stories online but it wasn't painful at all. The key I think was that I was given proper meds for after, antibiotics straight away to avoid infection (which is common), lots of liquid painkillers and mouth wash. I was under Guys in London and they were excellent. I took two weeks off work and it was fine. I maybe had a couple of colds/sore throat since and feel so much better in myself. I blame my parents for not getting it sorted when I was younger! 😉
