Ears blocked after flu - suggestions

Hoopla5005 · 30/11/2018 19:17

So been down all week with the flu :-( started Monday night. Just started to feel a bit better today and have more energy then my hearing goes. Every time I get a cold / flu my hearing is messed up for a good 10 days afterwards until it eventually drains. Does anyone else have this problem and have any quick fix remedies :-( I’m getting so fed up of this secondary illness which prolongs me feeling rubbish for an extra 1-2 weeks!!!! And it’s after every single cold!!!!!

They're maybe due a syringe / microsuction out. They could be partially blocked all the time but you don't notice. Excess fluid during a cold completes the blockage until it drains.

Perhaps avoid dairy and drink lots of water.

Hoopla5005 · 02/12/2018 06:34

I used to have them syringed a lot when I was younger but never seemed to help at the time weirdly Confused

My illness has now made me have a constant chesty cough which is fabulous, stuffy head, blocked nose and ears, lethargic, headache and now cough. Been 7 days now. Feeling sorry for myself!!

Will do absolutely nothing to resolve your ear problems.

You poor thing. I really sympathise. Struggled with ear problems all my life.

Time is the best healer (sorry)
You may be able to aid by steamy water in a bowl and towel over your head. Deep breaths.

But really time

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 02/12/2018 06:41

Try s decongestant, Sudafed for example?

IggyAce · 02/12/2018 06:43

Google, massage for blocked ears, there are quite a few videos so try one of those.

FaithInfinity · 02/12/2018 06:45

First thing to try is inhaling steam, head over a bowl for 10 minutes. I’d try Sudafed drugs as well. It could be you just need to decongest. If it doesn’t settle in a week or so you’ll need to see your GP.

Dairy and gluten absolutely, 100 per cent, clog my sinuses and my daughter’s ears....

Well then you and your daughter are allergic if you have this reaction every time you have dairy and gluten.

Although that would be very serious (coeliac)

2isabella2 · 02/12/2018 07:21

My daughter has an otovent, maybe this would help you. It's a device to blow up a balloon with your nose.

2isabella2 · 02/12/2018 07:23

Actually, just remembered you're not supposed to use it when ill and not sure how effective it would be using it when not ill to encourage drainage when you are. Not very helpful, sorry!

eurochick · 02/12/2018 07:40

Workreturner, dairy encourages mucus production. Avoiding it when you have a cold can reduce the heaviness. I thought this was pretty well known!

Workreturner · 02/12/2018 08:18

@eurochick

Please link to any bona guide medical website. NHS etc that actually refers to this!!

WheelyCoteClaus · 02/12/2018 08:38

It'll clear in a week or two

Inniu · 02/12/2018 08:44

I found frequent use of a saline nasal spray helped.

Calledyoulastnightfromglasgow · 02/12/2018 23:01

No my daughter and I are not “allergic”, we are “intolerant” which isn’t really recognised medically.

Which is a damn shame really as we have both avoided surgery and countless rounds of antibiotics since working it out.

But hey, it’s all anecdotal!

FaithInfinity · 03/12/2018 06:43

Yes dairy can definitely exacerbate mucous production. True dairy allergies are less common, intolerances are more common. Coeliac isn’t an allergy as such, it’s an autoimmune condition that reacts to gluten consumption.

Hey I realise this is really old but I’m struggling after a really phlemy cold my ears feel weird like more sensitive to sound. Any ideas?

Rottontomato · 25/09/2021 15:39

Hi Hoopla5005
I have the same problem (I know this post is from 2018) and was wondering if you got an answers or help and advice on what might be causing the ear problems after every cold?
I’m currently having problems with both ears after starting with a head cold a few days ago, it’s awful.
Any advice would be helpful x

ACCx · 25/09/2021 16:05

Hi I also posted on here looking for some help. I had to take nasal spray for quite a while to get my ears back to normal.

Rottontomato · 25/09/2021 17:33

ACCx did it work? What did you use please.
