she gets altered when her temp gets high .. its rather worrying

How are you taking her temp?

Curmudgeonlett · 22/06/2007 17:28

Braun ear thermometer .. average of 3 tries

You can give upto 10 mils of Calpol I think. Try giving her the other 2.5 mils.

Tepid flannelling - she won't like it but persevere. My kids get very high temp when they ar eill and the flannelling is really good and sips of water.

Smurfgirl · 22/06/2007 17:33

Yes cool water and maybe a fan - but not directly on her just cooling the air around her.

I would ring NHS direct for dosing guideance.

LowFatMilkshake · 22/06/2007 17:35

Got told when DS was in hospital not to physical try to cool babies by bathing etc as the body tries to heat up more to compensate.

Instead cool from wthin with lots of yoghurt, fluid and anything else you can get them to have.

have you started the antibiotics?

reikizen · 22/06/2007 17:47

If you have any homeopathic remedy Belladonna that's good for lowering temps too. Is she okay apart from being hot? Temps are the bodies way of dealing with invaders as long as child is not too ill I try not to worry about it and let the body do it's thing.

Curmudgeonlett · 22/06/2007 17:59

well she seems finally to be heading downwards

thanks

I gave her a frozen frube which seemed to help

Yes gave her first dose anti-biotics at lunchtime

The only problem with this one getting high temps is she gets floppy and wibbly (dissasociated) and its rather scary to watch so I become concerned when its approaching 40 and failing to reduce with medication

Curmudgeonlett · 22/06/2007 18:00

sorry she has a UTI hence the anti-bs

Oh, poor little thing. Sounds really nasty. hope she shows curmudgeonly resilience and is chirpier soon. ABs do seem to kick in fast with children.

SilentTerror · 22/06/2007 18:03

Hospital doses are 20mg per kg of child's weight for calpol,10mg/kg of nurofen.HTH!

foxinsocks · 22/06/2007 18:03

oh it's horrible when they get wibbly

hope the medicine carries on working - once the antibs kick in and start on the infection, she should start to feel a bit better

fingers crossed that happens soon

steph69 · 22/06/2007 18:04

So frightening when you see it go up but I am pleased to hear the temp is going down.

SleeplessInTheStaceym11House · 22/06/2007 18:05

aha, souds like mine atm, shes had a temp of 40+ all afternoon, shes also got a UTI and started her anti-bis yesterday!

hopefully your lo will get better soon! good luck

foxinsocks · 22/06/2007 18:06

there's something about UTIs and temperature spikes, isn't there? I have no idea why but when dd had a UTI, her temp also went sky high and she did that thing where their eyes roll into the back of their head (iyswim)

they are nasty things UTIs

hope the girls get better soon!

SilentTerror · 22/06/2007 18:14

High temperatures very common with UTIs.Give regular calpol 6 hrly and nurofen 8 hourly, even if temperature seems to be coming down.Plenty of fluids too.Doses 20mg per kg for calpol,10 mg per kg for Nurofen in case you missed my earlier post!

Curmudgeonlett · 22/06/2007 18:20

Thanks SilentTerror

Just to check

she weighs 17kg

the nurofen is 100mg/5ml concentration so she can have 17 x 10 = 170mg which would be a 8.5ml

the calpol is 120mg/5ml concentration
so you're saying she can have 17 x 20 = 340mg which would be 14ml per dose

and this is at the standard distance apart

is that right?

Kids' fever tends to spike at night, so you might have to be vigilant tonight. If her fever reaches 40 C compress wet towel on her legs, arms, and forehead. If it stays at or near 40 C tonight despite the paracetemol and ibuprofen, I would definitely take her to the doctor tomorrow.

Good luck. I hope your little one feels better soon.

steph69 · 22/06/2007 21:26

Leave her to sleep with as little covering as poss if she still has a temp and keep the liquids and medicine going.

SilentTerror · 22/06/2007 21:58

Sorry have been away! Yes,you are correct Curmdgeonlett, they are the right doses. Her temperature should start tocome down with the correct doses and usually 48 hours after commencing antibiotics. If it persists for many days I would take her back to the GP and check that the infection she has is sensitive to the antibiotic she is on.
Hope all ok and apologies for delayed reply!
