Constant pain with teeth

For the last 18 months or so I've battled overly-sensitive teeth, have made several emergency trips to have the gel stuff out on and for the last 3+ months have been prescribed duraphat.

This week was my regular check-up and my dentist was very surprised by the sensitivity I'm experiencing despite treatments. She x-rayed but found absolutely nothing amiss. When she was painting on the gel I was squirming in pain and she said it was extreme and what she would expect from severe decay - literally nubs!

I'm in constant low-grade pain and I can't stand it any longer. :(

She's referring me to the dental teaching hospital but I have no idea what to expect.

There are rumblings online in groups I'm in where people are on lamotrigine and are having enamel issues. Has anyone come across this correlation before?

I am so fed up.

Hi

The original poster alerted me to this thread so I am joining in. I want to say that I have been suffering from sensitive teeth as a result of a scale and polish at the hygenist. The teeth were not sensitive before. I have to say that whilst I am happy to have been given good advice by the hygenist which I followed, I do think she is trying to get me to have a scale and polish too often. Before I went to see her I had not had a scale and polish for a few years by a hygenist because the other dental surgeries that I had been attending did not have one and I do not know why because it is essential. The dentist used to do the scaling etc and they are not hygenists so they do not do such a thorough job although they are obliged to do a quick go over. The hygenist at the place I now attend said my gums were inflamed and scaled and polished my teeth. She showed me how to brush properly especially along the gum line. I took note of what she said and duly bought an electric toothbrush and started scrubbing because she told me to go back in two months to see if there was an improvement. I went back as directed and she was happy to see an improvement as was I because I want a clean mouth. However I think I over did it and my teeth became sensitive to hot and cold. I googled this and google said sensitivity is natural with a scale and polish from a hygenist. On my second visit she did another very thorough scale and polish and my teeth felt more sensitive than before afterwards. The actual process of scaling and polishing was not painful in the slightest. She then told me to return again in two months time as she wanted to see an even further improvement. I have now started to have doubts because google says this

Excessive scaling procedures can cause enamel erosion and that is not a good thing. Due to enamel erosion, the protective layer becomes thin. Thin enamel makes your teeth more vulnerable to bacteria attacks and tooth decay. However, teeth scaling is a safe procedure if done with a time gap of four or five months.

My hygenist at the moment wants to do mine every two months and it does not give my teeth time to recover between one visit and the next. I have had two visits so far and know how to brush and floss which has been proven by my mouth and gums looking better (verified by the dentist) I have therefore cancelled my next appointment in two months time. Tonight I was able to drink some hot tea Inot boiling hot as I never could take very hot tea) but hotter than I have been able to manage since my teeth started being sensitive so I think they are beginning to settle down and although I had a bit of sensitivity from the tea it was nowhere near as bad as it has been. So I am going to see if it carries on like this tomorrow which I hope it does. I am going to have to put my foot down and be firm and say I do not want to see the hygenist every two months because I know what to do and I am not a child and am intelligent enough to know that i need to take as much care as possible before it is too late.

Any comments gratefully received

I went to a max facs consultant last week (3month wait) and obviously the pain wasn't there when I went Hmm but was diagnosed with atypical facial pain and nothing wrong with my teeth at all. In short there's nothing they can do but refer me further on to Guys or Eastman's for nerve blocks but no thank you.

Sorry to those who have serious pain issues. Today I can eat warm porridge and drink warm tea with no trouble. I’m still a bit nervous to eat or drink anything that is hotter than warm but so far so good
