Any cardiologists out there?

I've been told I have minor thickening of the anterior mitral valve leaflet and trivial regurgitation. Checking again in 2 years which makes me think it's nothing major? Any advice please?

It’s quite common, I have exactly the same, it was picked up when I was 10.

MummaPI · 29/11/2018 20:26

Wow 10?
Does it give you symptoms? I have palpitations but I think that's more hormonal 🙄

Palpitations is my only symptom, I can’t remember having them as a child but was bothered with them from early twenties, one cardiologist said they are common with mitral valve defects, another said it was hormonal and most recent one said they would improve if I lost a bit of weight!
I was monitored every two years until I got to my twenties, they then discharged me but I have found my GP to be happy to refer me back roughly every five years.
I have no other symptoms, you are advised to attend dentist regularly and they used to insist on antibiotics for dental work and during labour, but that advice was changed a few years back.

That's interesting about the anti biotics. I had to have it in labour because of group b strep but what's the link with the dentist?

Because they were worried that you were at risk of bacterial endocarditis if you had a valve problem and were having treatment such as scaling, extraction or root canal, but research showed the risk as low and they are obviously worried about antibiotic resistance.

Thank you, what does it mean for the future? Not sure if there's anything I should/ should not be doing?

My DS developed infective endocarditis and had 2 x open heart surgeries on his mitral valve (posterior leaflet and ring) in January. He also will have to have prophylactic antibiotics if he has dental work when he's old due to the infection risk. His still has trivial regurg and turbulence across the valve but otherwise he's doing really well and will be seen again in a years time. The hope is that the valve repair will grow with him but there's no guarantee that he won't go back into surgery to have a new valve fitted when he's older. My understanding is that a lot of people can have mild regurg without it being an issue but you're in the system so can be checked regularly and seen quickly if needs be.

Gosh sorry to hear your son has been through all that. It sounds like this can happen at any age, I'm 42 and I wasn't sure what this meant for me. Was a bit scared if I'm honest. Thank you both for your replies.

I think that it a sign that there is nothing to worry about now, if they're happy to see you in a couple of years. Obviously if you get breathless then it needs to be looked at as that could be the cause of it. Try to be happy and healthy but continue life as normal.

DS had endocarditis and OHS on his mitral valve secondary to urosepsis and posterior urethral valves that he was born with which we didn't know about. He was 4 and 5 weeks old when he had surgery. He's a happy healthy almost 1 year old now Smile
