No but thats what I'm saying - I have had LFTs done all the time for the last ten years (as I have another, non liver related medical condition) and despite drinking these have never gone outside normal levels apart from one brief period when I drank a silly amount (and then stopped) - and at that time you could see the LFTs rise and then fall

huffpuff · 22/06/2007 16:02

well i am gonna have some wine tonight and tomorrow night (just to finish my supply!) but from Sunday onwards my body will be a wine free area - alcohol makes me crazy anyway and i never know when to stop so this coupled with hopefully doing my health some favours will be enough to motivate me - heopefully

Can you get liver function tests done on request or does there have to be reason i.e symptoms of liver problems? DH wants one doing.

huffpuff · 22/06/2007 16:03

Bimblin - when you say a "silly amount" - how much is that?

Agree with what everyone has said here but do just bear in mind that once you have the LFT it will be disclosable on all your medical disclosure requests for life/health insurance etc and might lead to a few issuses for life etc insurance.

harleyd · 22/06/2007 16:10

i also have liver & kidney function tests every 6 mths, these have always been well within the normal range. and i have probably been drinking 8 pints every friday & saturday night for about 15years, not to mention the vodka & tequila shot episodes when i was young enough not to know better. would you not need to be drinking in excess every single day to cause major damage

huffpuff · 22/06/2007 16:12

the more i think about it the more i realise just how heavily i have drank/drunk(?!) the last 10 years or so.

Scary

how do people drink 8 pints in a night anyway? Aren't you always on the loo!

harleyd · 22/06/2007 16:17

lol, nah i have a great bladder!

jalopy · 22/06/2007 16:31

Forgive me if I'm wrong but I remember someone on here saying that the liver can be significantly damaged before it starts to show up on the LFT's. I wouldn't assume that normal LFT's means your liver is okeydokey, iyswim.

Bimblin · 22/06/2007 17:17

Oh. Well I'm screwed then.

handlemecarefully · 22/06/2007 17:17

Well perhaps the doctor will advise on other tests to complement the LFT - will ask that question about whether it is a completely safe indication of liver good health

8 pints in a night is not a problem! The headache and vomiting the morning after sucks though!

Someone on Mumsnet posted a while ago that a liver funtion test only shows a problem once function reaches 20% or less.

Don't know if this is true, or if I (more than anyone) should be worried. Had a liver test a few months ago that came back normal, and with my habits, was EXTREMELY surprised!!

huffpuff · 26/06/2007 21:36

HMC - did you go to your gp?
